Renzi Stone

Denver was this thread actually started to discuss old players or to call out our a certain group?

If you really are wanting to discuss these old players feel free and I encourage because due to my youth I am limited in my history of Sooner basketball (for example I barely recall Yanish and I only recall Renzi's last two years as that 98 team is the first sooner team I remember more than just a player or two.) I really do enjoy the threads talking about the history of OU basketball as I enjoy history and I've soaked up a ton of knowledge on Sooner football through reading but sadly due a lack of books on Sooner basketbal (outside of Sampsons) I haven't had the same chance for my favorite sport.

But if it is as it appears, that this was more of a call out thread to dig at Capel supporters who are young than I ask you to please stop. I know you are not the first to throw the proverbial first stone but I am drawing my line in the sand here.

There have been errors made on both sides in this little feud but right now I would like for it to come to an end. I will be giving my best effort to cut out the habit of attacking posters credentials in order to make a point in the future. If the age card continues to be played on either side the threads will at first be moved to the smack board or locked. If posters continue to create arguments over this they will be given temp bans.

This board isn't the place to have school yard like arguments over what makes a better fan. This is a free board and it doesn't matter if you've been liking OU since 1940 or just moved to the state yesterday and decided to support the crimson and cream.

And no this does not mean I am shutting down the fire capel arguments, I'm just saying make your point without attacking another posters credentials (unless they're a troll of course ;) ).

For the record I don't consider myself much of Capel supporter at this point. If going to as many games I can this season and enjoying the few wins makes me a supporter in your eyes then so be it. But you can ask those that know me or have discussed it with me, I'm become more and more open to the idea of a change at head coach given the direction this program appears to be headed. I really hope Capel proves me wrong on that though.

Because the bulk of them seem to be members of the Capables which means they are probably 18-22 years old. If I am correct about that they would have been pretty young when those guys played for OU. Al Gore hadn't even invented the internet when Yanish played.

Please don't group a Capel supporter and student with the Capables, that's low. Real low.

Denver doesn't need me to defend him because he's pretty adept with a keyboard.

However, this thread died 2 days ago, so why would you, Sam, post on it to ask if he was "calling out" Capel supporters or just posting something of historical nature for discussion? If you thought he was "calling out", why not just let the thread continue to die as it was doing and just leave it be?

Regardless, I don't see how anybody can read the OP and actually believe he is "calling out" anybody? He brought up 2 players who are not considered as 2 of the better players in the last 30 years and said they would make nice additions to this team because this team has very little front-line depth.

I agree with him as Stone would be a starter on this team, and probably one of the better players because of his rebounding, defense, and physicality on the inside. I also think Yannish would see considerable minutes on this team, as much or more than Thompson because Yannish had more upside than what I've seen of Thompson so far. Sampson didn't play Yannish very much because Jason seemed to crap all over himself when he entered most games, save the KU game in 96 when he dominated the paint down the stretch. Yannish was like Longar with Sampson. Both had potential, Longar much more potential than Yannish, but because Sampson had little patience for crappy play (turnovers and bad defense) he didn't allow players to get comfortable in flow of the game before he pulled them. For this reason, both Longar and Yannish didn't develop to their full potential under Sampson, but Longar did realize his potential with Capel because Capel allowed Longar to get into the flow of the game (and eventually he overcame his anxiety or whatever it was that caused him to mentally check out).

(FYI: Yannish was light years better than Big Country in high school. Not even close as Yannish had a great offensive game and a nice shooting touch. He just wasn't physical. Had Tubbs stuck around, Yannish would have been a very serviceable player, and maybe even very good player, at OU because Tubbs had more patience than Sampson. Reeves, OTOH, was put on the floor from day 1 at OSU and his game developed over time but Yannish was never given that opportunity.)

The last sentence of Denver's post says "I wonder if any of the big Capel supporters know who these guys are?". To which you answer in your post you don't know who they are. You barely remember Stone, but have no clue about Yannish.

So, you make his point that some of the younger fans don't know who these players are, but then you ask him if he's calling out Capel supporters. :facepalm

Why wouldn't a Capel supporter know who these guys are?
Capel supporters are OU fans.

Exactly.

What some of you on this board don't understand is that when you see a post by me that says "capelfan52" and you get all pissed off that I would disagree with you about fired our OU head coach is that if we had another coach named Anderson, Smith or Jones, when I posted it would say "jonesfan52" or "Smithfan52". It's called supporting your team. I know there are dozens of other posters on this board that has the same philosophy or feel the same way. They are the dozens that are at the games each week.

I didn't like Kelvin Sampson as a person but I still went to about 100 games during his career at OU. If you only support OU when things are going well and you only want to cause problems when they aren't, then we don't need you.

I kinda agree with your last sentament. But I don't think anyone dislikes Capel as a person. In fact he seems like a pretty good guy to me. The problem with Capel is his style or lack there of is hard to support for anyone. That's why attendance is falling to the floor. Now you can say the same a bit about Kelvin but everyone knew what he was doing and he was meticulous in most of his substitution patterns and you knew every year we would defend. You don't know what OU's going to do game to game now except that it won't be that good.

This is where you are wrong. I don't "get all pissed off" because somebody disagrees with me. I believe you are entitled to your opinion and therefore, if you think Capel can right the ship, then so be it. I, however, don't think he can and when I state my opinion some on this board get pissed off. Seems to me the people who get pissed off are the ones who believe Capel should be given a chance to fix it.

Just because I don't think Capel can fix the problem doesn't mean I don't still support the university. I still want OU to win and if that means Capel keeps his job, then so be it as long as he's winning games I don't care. Vladimir Putin could be coaching the team and if he won games I'd support him, and I think most people on this board feel that way.

Some of the Capel supporters need to quit being so defensive.

Honestly, I agree. I can't count how many times I've been called names on here in the past month simply because I have voiced that I'm not satisfied with where we are right now as a program. Furthermore it absolutely shocks me that there is anyone that IS satisfied with where we are as a program right now.

According to some simply because I have voiced that opinion means that I have a personal vendetta against Jeff Capel, I am a front runner, I sit around ripping our players, blah, blah, blah.

I don't understand why some people on this board believe that to be a "true fan" we all have to sit here and sing kumbaya while we have two seasons as bad as we are currently experiencing. I want better for our program. Hell, I DEMAND better for our program. If that makes me a bad fan, then so be it.

Because Nick and Traveler both made a posts in this thread only about a hour before my post occurred. I was unable/wanting to deal with the thread the original day because I was sick that day and busy with other things.

Maybe because he also made this post in this thread? Or did you not see it?

Given the way the "capel won't be bought out thread" ended and some posts in this thread I figured this was the best place as any to address the young vs old argument that seems to be growing among a few on here. I'm sorry that the manner I went about in addressing it offended you.

I will admit I have been lazy on some of the issues (name calling, true fan arguments, etc) in regards to moderation in the past month. One because I tend go have a laissez type viewpoint on that stuff and two the aforementioned laziness on moderation issues. I am going to make more of an effort to have that form of bickering come to an end.

I would even take an Ernie Abercrombie right now. He was the only effective 5'9" power forward I've ever seen.

And yes, for those that do not follow hyperbole, I realize he was not really 5'9".

It was not intended to insult the Capables or studends. It was simply my belief that students and/or other young people are not likely to remember Yanish, Stone or Wylie. I did not start school until the mid 80s and barely ever saw Wyman play (other than clips later). I never saw Adams play. But for the internet, I would not know how the guy was. Now I am talking about Wayman Tisdale and Adams, former superstars, not simply solid college basketball players like Stone, Yanish and Wylie.

Additionally, younger people may not know this but in the late 90s there was a lot of discussion on the internet about how bad Sampson was at getting big men. I was never in that crowd but in retorspect he did a much better job than Capel has done for this season (in the past Capel has had better bigs than Sampson had early in his career).
