Chuck Fairbanks played a huge role in the resurgence of OU football in the late 60s-early 70s. I know I was sorry to see him go – he was a gentleman as well a a heck of a football coach. Barry was, of course, picked to continue the rebuilding job Fairbanks started, and the rest, as they say, is history.

RIP, Chuck Fairbanks. True Sooner fans will never forget you.

Good post but some would say Jim McKenzie started it since he brought Chuck and Barry, as well as many other good assistants with him (Galen hall, jimmy Johnson, proctor, etc.).

Good point, Booger. I should have included Mackenzie for the reasons you mentioned. Poor guy never got the chance to show what he could do as a head coach for the Sooners.

McKenzie did bring in some excellent assistants, but Johnson and Proctor weren't among them. Fairbanks hired Johnson in 1970 and Switzer hired Proctor in 1973.

The coaching staffs from 1967-72 are arguably some of the greatest collections of coaches in the history of college football.
