Sad news regarding Manute Bol

How sad. I watched a documentary about him a few years ago. He was a truly good person and a hero in the Sudan.

I always liked Manute. I can remember seeing him play against the OKC Cav's when he was in CBA for a year. Sounds like he was a pretty neat guy.

I'm afraid "pretty neat guy" doesn't quite do the man justice. Bol basically spent every dime of the money he made in the NBA to make life a little better for the impoverished people of the Sudan.

You're right, that was rather trite. I meant no disrespect.

I didn't think you were being disrespectful, Soonerspiff. Just wasn't sure if you knew how special a person Manute was.

I had a lot of respect for Manute due to all of the amazing things he did and tried to do for his country and his people.

He's certainly the type of guy who should be remembered as a major hero and the Spud Webb/Manute Bol confrontation on the court was something to see.

My memory of Manute Bol goes back goes back a few years ago when I was refereeing a HS basketball tournament at 2nd Baptist in Houston (mega-church). It's a private school with pretty nice facilities. In fact they have 3 gyms and I was calling a consolation game in their back gym ..... it is a place where a lot of the ex-NBA players play pickup games.

He kept opening a door and calling me over asking how much time was left in the game..... he didn't want the crowd to see him. He was taller than the door frame. I've got a friend who played in the NBA for a few years and is 7' tall (Steve Hayes) .... and Manute towered over him. He was freakishly tall.

Seemed like a nice guy.
