I have mixed feelings about all of this stuff. Is it okay to say "I'll give anyone that injures Alex Smith $10,000 for doing so"? No, it's not okay. Is it okay to say "We're going to hit the quarterback as often as we can, and hopefully knock him out of the game"? Yes, it is.

Intentionally hitting to the head though ... that's beyond physical play. It's intentionally violent and probably criminal. Kurt Warner played his last game vs the Saints after being hit in the head. if the statutes has not passed I would not be surprised if criminal charges were filed.

I played football at a decent level. All I can say is - based on my slice of experience - that type of rhetoric has to exist everywhere. But to the explicit extent Williams was using is going too far. In other words, what seniorsooner said.
I think going "after the head" or whatever he specifically said is the most egregious.
Because going after the head - even apart from severe concussions - essentially means going after the neck. And that's where football ends and something else begins.
I was primarily an offensive lineman, so most of the 'cheap shots' I witnessed were punches to the balls. Because most lineman I knew found wearing jocks too constricting, so your boys are hanging out there unprotected. But I also played defense my whole life, and I know the difference between wanting to knock the hell out of someone and wanting to hurt someone. One is simply about how hard you hit someone. The other is about where you hit them.
