Unveiled his 68 best teams.

OU #17

In front of OU:
  • WVU (beat them)
  • Texas (beat them)
  • Alabama (beat them)
  • Houston (who has played nobody and lost to East Carolina)
  • Michigan (who hasn't played in a month)

I tend to agree. If we had found a way to beat Texas Tech without two starters, we would probably be top 5 in that list. It's a slim margin.

I wouldn't sweat it. The good folks over at Bracket Matrix have tabulated the fields of 95 different bracketologists. Their survey has us as the highest-rated 5-seed.....which means, 17th!

Why isn't Xavier rated higher? They blew our doors off!

Alabamuh's overrated. I wasn't all that impressed.
Houston's pretty good.
Michigan is a paper tiger. No clue if Juwan Howard can coach a lick.

It's all semantics when you get in as a 4, 5 or 6. Especially this year. One foot in front of the other in front on a truly neutral floor.

We have many opportunities in front of us to improve our seed. One game at a time.

I'm not worried about it, but Bilas is a weasel. He snidely wrote us off in the pregame before the Bama game, but has made no effort that I've seen or heard to give us our due credit since. His arrogance on-air (I have no idea what he's actually like in person) is beyond off-putting.

Eh, no need to ever worry about this stuff. Every team on every list will be pissed unless they are number one. It usually sorts itself out by Selection Sunday, and media members aren’t the ones who seed things anyway. I think Bilas is a smart guy and unlike most media members, he is willing to call out the NCAA for its BS and hypocrisy. As far as pregame predictions, the only certainty is that one team’s fan base will be happy and the other team’s fan base will be upset. I’ve heard and read lots of media members give OU a ton of praise over the past few weeks.

On a more significant note, I think this Saturday is when the committee releases their list of the top 16 overall seeds. I think there is a good chance we will be on the four line.

not a bilas fan at all....but I'm not too freaked out about our ranking. We haven't played the 2nd game of wv otr ut. Both will be tough.

bama...since getting beat by mu might have dropped some.

Michigan and Houston...meh.

Can't believe Drake at 18-1 aren't ranked at all...:ez-roll:

I like our team, they had a nice def run there but kind of dropped the ball vs isu...but still a win. I'm just not sure we are top 10...I like the 15-20 range..but we'll see how the rest of the season goes. Still have tough games left.

I read the entire article and can provide some context. He's not only rating teams based upon their accomplishments/metrics, but also based upon his subjective view of a team's "ceiling". From his comments about OU, I think he feels that this team is close to "maxing out" because of not having any real superstar. The "sum of the parts" would probably be an accurate representation of how he feels about OU. But I thought he was fairly complimentary in his write-up.

Many times, Bilas comes off as an arrogant prick (a Dukie), but he is one of the few color commentators that I can withstand to listen to.

It’s a lazy take. We have guys who can shoot 1-5 and play tremendous defense. We have athleticism and length. We have multiple ball handlers. He probably doesn’t even know who a guy like emoja Gibson is I guarantee it. We don’t look much different than the Villanova teams that have had success in the tournaments. This team could go deep in March.

And we have good coaching. The entire staff is very strong right now IMO.

I agree with all that except throwing ourselves on our sword over the ISU game. We were a last-second three away from winning by double digits. We didn't play badly on Saturday -- the ONLY reason it was close was that ISU was unconscious from deep. We shot 55% in that game.

We don't have to apologize for that win. Bama beat South Carolina by three tonight. WVU beat ISU by just four a few days ago. texas squeaked by against KSU tonight. A win's a win, and virtually every team in the country (with a couple of obvious exceptions) has had some close calls.

Looks like he is being more than fair to us

See how we finish.. I have high hopes, but at same time we have some dudes that are playing way above their expectations. Basically we look like an average team to the outside world that is getting lucky with some big wins.

I still have my worries with Kuath and Manek disappearing in big games, but our guards are so good right now. Hoping for a 3/4 seed and a sweet 16/elite 8 run.

If #12 in the country is average to the outside world... I’ll take it.

Agree, skyvue.

But some of our more knowledgeable posters prefer ritual suicide whenever we fail to win by a sufficient margin.

lol I mean I just feel like we don't look the part as a top team in the Nation is all... We don't have big time names or highly recruited athletes, but we are finding ways to get it done.

If Bilas is looking at the full picture of each team's season and ranking them based on that picture, then I agree. We're probably 15-20.

But in the last 6 weeks, we've played like a top 10 team. Keep in mind that we were in the 40s at both Ken Pom and Jeff Sagarin at Christmas. We're now sitting right at 20 in both lists. That is almost impossible to rise that far at this point in the season.

Sagarin has our recent play ranked at #10 nationally.

IF you take the average of AP, coaches, NET, RPI, KenPom, Sagrin, BPI, and Bracketmatrix, we average a ranking of 18.0 right now. That's pretty good. and a ranking below what Jay has us at. In the beginning of the article he says at this point we have enough data to accurately rank teams. So it is based on results of the whole season.

"Now, in February, the dog days of the college basketball season, we have results and data that allow all to move beyond what we think about a team, what we believe can and will happen for a team, and dwell more upon what a team has accomplished on the floor."

That quote is taken directly from his article. We have played great in January and early February. We also got the brakes beaten off of us by Xavier. We are a really good team and i don't think 17 is disrespectful at all to what our program has done this year.

Beat WVU on Saturday, sweep osu, beat KSU and ISU, and we will be looking at a 3 or 4 seed. We are better than those teams IMO but while we beat WVU, they Swept tech who swept us. So its not as cut and dry as we beat WVU we should be ranked higher, just like nobody thinks Xavier should be ranked above us.

oh I agree...didn't try to imply nothing different...except our 3 pt def. When a team has the FG % they did from the 3 vs the 2 ya know the stars are aligned.

I always think it’s funny when people get worked up about polls or how one person ranks teams, but for everyone who was so upset about this a few weeks ago, I’d suggest looking at his current list. He now has us 15 ... two spots better than we were in the list he put out a while back. Agree or disagree, one thing it shows is that he is smart enough not to overreact to the past two weeks. For the same reason, he also didn’t drop Ohio State far. Every year come Selection Sunday, we have so many posters who focus almost entirely on what has happened down the stretch, but the actual committee, plus media members like Bilas, do a much better job at looking at the season as a whole.
