SI Article

Nice article. Is the person who wrote it really named Scooby Axson?????

This is really good. First look inside the program in quite some time.

Good or bad as each reader and fan might see it, the story confirms what many thought.

Sherri is first interested in the person and basketball second. She sees the sport as an opportunity to not only win championships and to do her job, but to, more importantly, make better human beings.

The two are not exclusive, but they can frequently clash.

The story confirms what every OU fan should realize. Sherri is an outstanding person, a mentor, a teacher, a preacher, a role model and, also btw, a basketball coach.

That doesn't mean she's perfect as a person or a coach.

I do think her approach sometimes hurts the program in recruiting and signing top-quality players, but I laud it nonetheless.

Coaches like Sherri deserve to win it all and I hope she can find a way to do it, not just for OU and the program, but for her.

Whatever approach she has been using hasnt worked on upper echelon recruits. How much of a change is it to first consider the player's personality profile then her talent from what Sherri has been doing in her approach to recruiting? Maybe giving the personality profile precedence over talent. I'm not sure what the change amounts to.

I think you are wrong in how we've been doing it. I thought we made a change about 3 years ago to where we really concentrated on top 20 recruits. We were in on a lot of them, but didn't land any, and as a result maybe missed out on some of the next ones down. So now we are looking for program fit, which is what we used to do, and maybe that will get us back to the level we used to be.

Sherri has never been that strong of a recruiter... Not sure what level there is to get back to... OU has been getting visits by some of the top kids in the nation going back to Vickie Baugh being on campus. Just can never get them to sign up... that's the area that needs to be fixed.

We shall see, but I expect things to remain about the same..

Well, certainly the next two seasons, both recruiting and play, will be the truest indicator.

If we suck the next two years or fail to reach loftier goals, then you could say the new Sherri and the new approach were failures.

If we get back to the elite 8 or higher, then we would all say the new way has born fruit.

I still think she should be looking at basketball talent, ability and impact first because that's the job she's getting paid a million a year to do -- no matter what system she's using.

Being well-balanced, decent, successful people, or turning out such is truly a great result and is important. But it isn't her prime directive.

"Being well-balanced, decent, successful people, or turning out such is truly a great result and is important. But isnt her prime directive." It also doesnt exclude successfully recruiting the best players-it isnt mutually exclusive.

When I saw the headline of the article, I got excited. I thought she knew she was going to have to get more athletic players to contend for championships. Then in the middle of the article, it said recruiting the top players was not a high priority. What is changing?

The Team MVP thread got me thinks that Sherri might have a hard time identifying talent... more often then not we end up with kids who don't get a lot of time... we'll have to see if the kids in the 2017 class will help OU...

Do really think that's different from other schools?
