Smart Flopping

Smart will be a top ten pick. I'll put money on that right now.

He's got a big upside with a Deron Williams body, a Deron Williams first step and good defensive instincts. That's enough for most NBA teams.

He may be only hitting 33 % from threes but he's shooting quite a ways off the line (NBA 3s) without much effort.

I don't know, I just don't like his play. It doesn't impress me and never has. I just don't see an NBA pg or sg.

meh, I don't like him either. He will obviously be a first round pick and more than likely a lottery pick but I agree with Denver....I don't think he will ever play up to a first round pick.

I doubt if I have to tell anyone that I'm not a Marcus Smart fan by any means. But he will be a first round pick after this season, and you can take that to the bank.

His athleticism, size and huge upside will overshadow the flaws he has right now. It also helps that he is the media darling in every game he plays. NBA owners and coaches don't draft a kid based on the publicity he gets, but don't think for a minute they're not influenced by it to some degree.

I think his reputation with OSU and Team USA will help him get drafted high. I have a feeling he will be one of these rookies who will have a great start of his career and then fizzle out after a few years. Probably due to an injury from flopping , but he will be a great player for a few years.

IMHO Smart's leadership is his most underrated characteristic. Couple that with his work ethic and you have the makings of an elite player no matter the level. There aren't many players who can control a game like Smart.

You mean, at the college level?

I don't know if something like that translates as well as you might think to the NBA. NBA players are too good for anyone to control a game. They are just a bunch of elite athletes, balling in isolation and pick and roll sets.

Smart is a terrific college player, but some of his intangibles simply matter very little at the next level. When they say someone has great intangibles at the next level, they are the guys usually running with 2nd unit, playing 16 minutes a game. (See Nick Collison, who was also a terrific college player)

I think we will find out he's a much better college player (comparatively) than an NBA player. No big deal. I would love to have him here, aside from having to ignore the constant flopping.

I also am sick of the flopping. Everyone marvels at his strength and power, yet he gets thrown around like a rag doll out there (or thats what he would like you to think). Flopping is basically cheating. It's a disrespect for the game. If I were a ref, I would call a foul on him everytime he tried to pull that crap. Now I'm not gonna say he won't be a first round pick but if I had a lottery pick, I too would pass on him. You have to be able to shoot to be a shooting guard in the league, so you can forget about that. And I'm not sure he has the quickness or handles to truly be an effective PG. I think he's at his best when he posts people up..but at 6'4, he won't be able to do that in the league either.

I think for him it translates to the NBA. Collison is a bad comparison because he doesn't have the ball in his hands. Look at the top PGs in the league Paul, Westbrook, Rondo, Rose, D.Williams, Parker. These guys all control the game when they play, it's what makes them special.

I think at his best Smart is comparable to Paul. I also think Smart's game compares very favorably to Harden. I was one who thought Harden would be a bust coming out of ASU because of how selfish he was and I didn't think he was athletic enough to become elite in the NBA. I was dead wrong. I may be dead wrong again but I have seen him in person several times in HS and was so impressed with how he controlled both ends of the floor in every game I saw.
