Smart

it isn't that he doesn't want them. It is just that circumstances prevent him from getting many. He has always been able to round up enough good players to win. And I'm sure Oklahoma will be no different.

Like I said...this is a new ball game with these nba talents coming to college for a year or more. And theres no doubt that Kruger is a winner but since this has happened and talent pool is building up at these colleges; and even though UNLV has made it to the tournament 3 out of the last 4 years(coming from a weaker conference) they have only won 1 game in the tournament which was against Kent ST. If he can't upgrade his recruitment...we are going to have a hard time making it to the tournament when Baylor, Texas, KU, KST, OSU and Mizzou are bringing in top 100 players.

Kruger has a ceiling. Just like Kelvin had a ceiling. The good news is that ceiling is way higher than where the program currently resides.

And what is with the UNLV reference? OU is a much easier school to recruit to than UNLV. And Kruger probably took that school as far is it is capable of going clean.

And isn't there more to it than just signing the guy with the most stars?

You can't have 3 coach's in a span of 6 years and not expect to get leap frogged.
You can't give up on 'pipe dreams' like Smart and not expect to get Leap frogged.
Baylor has passed us b/c Drew has been there for awhile and has paid his dues. He went after guys like Dunn, Carter, Jones, Miller and he didn't listen to guys (like you) who said they had no chance at landing these kids.
You can recruit Smart and Woodard (along with other players) at the same time. At the end of the day...we might not get Smart, but we might not get Woodard either.

To be honest, I know all this. I was just stating an opinion. I actually think that the Baylor program is extremely shady.

I just dont think we get Smart, dont WANT Forte and dont want to miss out on Woodard while we wait out Smart. To be honest, Woodard might not be our fall back anyway and I realize that.

I actually trust Kruger and his staff. My original post was just how I felt after reading the latest article on Smart.

If Kruger can't take a dip into the Texas pool we are going to be in some trouble. With Turgeon now at Maryland and Capel at Duke...Texas players are going to start going fast. And So far 5 out of the top 6 have committed to Texas, aTm, Bay, Maryland, and Duke. And there are about 6 more texas players in the top 100 and Nino Jackson out of Oklahoma...and your talking about Woodard.

Yes I am talking about Woodard because

1. He has been coming on strong in recruiting circles all summer and has started getting high major D1 attention, including an offer from our in-state rival with more attention coming. So, we aren't talking about some scrub.

2.He doesn't come with the baggage of Nino Jackson. I don't profess to know Nino Jackson but if even half the stuff you read about is even close to true it reminds me of TMG wayyyyy too much.,with some of it possibly being worse.

3.He, obviously, has a brother the staff would LOVE to have.

4.If we want to close our borders in Oklahoma over the next few years and get the absolute best we have to offer it has to start somewhere and Woodard would be a great start.

I was tired of seeing quality, four-year, glue-type program builder kids slip through our fingers because Capel was a mediocre judge of talent and, more importantly, character. He single handedly dismantled a solid program over a course of a few years by doing EXACTLY what we are discussing. Going for the trophy fish and ignoring the ones that can feed the program over the long haul. I think Kruger has a better handle on his backup plans than Capel did so we should see that help but I want to see us cash in on the up and coming Oklahoma kids.

So yes. . .Im talking about Woodard, if that is what you want to sarcastically sling in my face.

I'm confused. Are you talking about Woodard?

Who slipped thru Capels fingers???? Name one that he could have gotten that he didn't get? Clarke??? I would take Warren over him...and over and over again. You talk about these Oklahoma kids like he didn't pursue any of them. He brought in Griffin, Neal, and Davis.

We can take Woodard, and our competition can take Smart and Austin.

And I love Cade Davis...but it took 4 years for him to make a major impact on our team...which is good b/c w/o him we probably wouldn't have won a single game last year. These are the type of guys your complaining about that Capel didn't load up our team w/.

Don't forget Amric Fields, Neal's high school teammate, who is currently at TCU.

Kid wanted to be a Sooner. Kills me every time I think about it.

As for Tyler Neal, we're just lucky he waited and our entire roster left at the end of the season, because I don't think Capel offers him otherwise.

Spangler would have been a committment this year...and who exactly is our coach this year...His name is not Capel.

I can't wait too see how this kid turns out though, b/c a lot of high school coach's in Oklahoma were not that impressed w/ him. And his stats mean nothing w/ him playing at Bridge Creek.

Unclear as to what you mean. Ryan Spangler is a freshman at Gonzaga right now. Are you saying Capel did not pass on him?

Name a coach that wasn't impressed with him? He would start for any team in the state. He avg a freaking triple double almost and had several quads! Took his team to a state finals game and lost to a team that has probably 6-7 d1 kids! Not impressed about what???

He played for bridge creek...get over yourself. Hardrick would have looked good playing there.

I'm saying...what would it have mattered. Capel recruited the Harrison twins, Ellis, and Randle...all were high on us and now that he's not here...not one of them is considering us and you guys are complaining that he didn't recruit him; 1.who knows if Spangler would have still came here if he did recruit him and 2. You guys are crying over a kid that couldn't even get ranked by a single recruiting site when we had 4 highly recruited kids considering us. Randle(the #2 player in the country) has said that OU was his #1 choice and Ellis has said that we were one of his top choices and I have to listen about Spangler.

If Spangler was on our roster right now...he wouldn't see any playing time til he was at least a junior b/c he would not play over Osby, Fitzgerald, MBaye, Neal, Honore, Washington, and Arent(if Capel was still here, he still wouldn't have played over Goff and even Arent would have most likely came here). Now if Capel was still here, and he would have brought in Ellis and Randle...Spangler never would have played for us. So if Capel is the one recruiting and he feels strongly that he was going to bring in Ellis and Randle...why waste another scholarship on a kid that most likely never would have played.

Ask most coaches which size class is toughest from top to bottom and they we say 4a. Yeah played for bc so what still kicked the crap of most except Douglass. No shame in losing to those guys.

And "get over myself"? Get inthe current Hs basketball scene before u speak for coaches! Because u aren't making yourself look too bright!

This is partly my point. . .Our competition is going to take Smart regardless. . .We can recruit him until we are blue in the face.

Who did we miss out on? Fields (wouldn't have been $3000 and a cloud of dust), Spangler (try to say he didn't go to Gonzaga on Capels watch. . And who exactly do you trust when it comes to judging basketball talent. . Mark Few or Jeff Capel?), Clarke (say what you want about him but he would have been a four year kid), and go beyond our borders and look at Capel and his eggs-in-one-basket blind pursuit of kids he recruited like Lucas (cost us a LOT of kids including Roberson, who would have come here)

Heck, I would have taken the best Oklahoma had to offer before taking flyers on the vast number of east coast one year and out transfers and the extensive list of mediocre big man flyers Capel took on kids who didnt even average double figures in juco.

You bring up Willie Warren like that was a super successful haul. He was here two years that was marred by a questionable attitude and even more questionable leadership when was supposed to be 'the man' so what did he accomplish in college Clarke didn't?

You still haven't given me a single legit, logical reason we should be pursuing Smart right now and not taking a long hard look at Woodard.

So it was a given he was going to bring in Ellis and Randle? Ok. . . And what about his track record proved that? Harrison Barnes? Oh he went to UNC. . Jones? My bad UK. . . Lucas? Oops UF. . .HECK, he couldnt even keep guys that already signed with us. (Reynolds and James). . .Capel lost out on far more than he hit on.

You keep throwing stuff out there like it is fact. You bash Spangler for where he played high school at. . . Really?

I understand the recruiting game. I coach for a living (as of this year I am a small college head coach. .I know not DI but the concepts are the same. .But less pressure for me). Its kind of like gambling, you have to know when to fold em'.

Passing on Roberson and waiting for Lucas was a big mistake.

it was obvious lucas was holding out for better offers. instead of getting a guy who would have been a real solid, reliable PG we wound up with zippy. then TMG the next year.

just not good.

Bringing up Roberson and Lucas. Who cares which one we went after...they both sucked in college. I don't care what Roberson's stats were...He was the starting PG for 4 years and TT did nothing but get worse year after year. Cade Davis led us to a better record his senior year then Roberson did.
