Some key recruits impacted by OT/Gallon saga

Don't you agree requiring simple verification on the source of funds for certain expenditures for recruits would prevent issues like this? Just like a mortgage company requires you to verify the source of your down payment. They don't care that you paid it, they care that you didn't borrow it.

It just gets old constantly losing scholarships, constantly being in front of the NCAA. I'm sick of the excuses. Somebody needs to change the culture.

Point being there are ways around all of this. If a kid or his family is going to take money and purposefully do something against the rules, they will find a way to do it.

So, OU should get verification of funds for every signed recruit's high school tuition?

You have a questionnaire that asks the relevant questions. If there is a red flag you require verification. Seriously how hard is this? The NCAA is being nice IMO if they accept our proposals. They could hammer us. The same story gets old after a while. Playing dumb doesn't fly with habitual repeat offenders.

Exactly. Before the Bomar fiasco I would expect possible negligence by the OU compliance department, but I believe the department was diligent in this scenario since significant upgrades in the compliance department were made following the aforementioned fall-out.

OU now has one the best compliance departments, if not the best, in the NCAA. It is a model for other schools. This happened after the Bomar situation. We have been applauded for it. So with that, they still couldn't have known about Gallon. Some people need to get their facts straight.

I don't have any inside info on our department but I can't help but think this to be true.

And Boca, the reason that OU has had these issues lately is b/c, for the most part, our compliance department self reports the issues when we find them. Most universities don't do that.

Absolutely the compliance department could require verification on the source of funds for private tuition, automobiles, rent/mortgage etc.

If we really cared this stuff would be easy to prevent.

I'm sure that would go over really well with families of recruits, having them interrogated about how they got the things they have, with the implication being you suspect they did something shady.

What kind of red flags should this have raised? It was a loan for a couple thousand dollars. It's not like mom moved into a $500,000 house and was driving a new beamer.

I think there's an issue beyond OU regarding prep schools. What going on when basketball players go to these places when parents can't afford the tuition?

Either they're full ride or they're not. How does this work?

Did OU encourage Gallon to go to the prep? And, if so, were we somehow responsible for getting Tiny's Mom into a financial bind? One where she was under stress to come up with her fees?

Even though it's a small amount, it could have been a case where Tiny's Mom had insufficient credit or didn't know where to turn. I'm not sure it's our job to rectify this. But, I bet the situation with owing some tuition and the school using the holding up of the transcript for leverage happens all the time.

It should be the prep school's job to find financing for the parents, should a parent have trouble paying the final payment. Don't put the onus on an upstream college. If the prep schools don't have a loan department or a group of lenders willing to work with their clients, then the prep school needs to be degraded. Red flags should pop up saying this school or that school is unwilling to help it's students should they run into financial straights. If it's only for the rich guys, advertise it that way.
