Some Notes/Quotes from Kruger's WWLS interview

Re: Kruger on the Sports Animal tonight at 5:40

feel sorry for Kruger that he has to be interviewed by these nickle dimers

Re: Kruger on the Sports Animal tonight at 5:40

this is painful. good lord.

Re: Kruger on the Sports Animal tonight at 5:40

Poor Kruger. That had to be one horrible experience for him.

Re: Kruger on the Sports Animal tonight at 5:40

Shut up, Traber. Good Lord what a "clown" as you all like to say. It's not about your baseball career and how highly rated your show is. Unreal.

Re: Kruger on the Sports Animal tonight at 5:40

That was embarrassing.

Re: Kruger on the Sports Animal tonight at 5:40

Wasn't thinking in this direction, didn't think it was an option.

Surprised at how interested Joe C was
Joe was great very positive, great pitch, ethuistastic, went to final 4 with him.

Importance of Relationship with AD and Pres
Its very important in knowing that Joe and Boren are great. UNLV guys are great, going to miss the opporutnity to meet with them. But very optimsitic about going forward with Joe and Dave. Really excited about them

The recruiting of Jucos
Its important to get really good players, 4 years is great but if you identify good players and fits from the juco rates. Had great success with D-1 transfers at UNLV.
Great players, great attitude, good people, represent OU in 1st class way

Jim asked him to tell about himself
Getting really good players, good core of players needed. Excited about the guys we got. THey're going to work hard. This is a young core, could be beneficiary about this,

No shortcuts, good players.

Shared ownership, need home court advantage. Get the students to come out and have fun.

Let the fans be proud.

About the Hawks
Was excited to go down there and change the culture. It was a shock at the time, first time I hadn't had success somewhere. It was a humbling experience, learned from it.

On being a winner, not a big time recruiter
Recruiting is based on what they did at high school and not in college a lot of times. I understand wanting to get highly ranked players but its about results. Good players.

Open practices
We dont think what we do that seriously, we work hard. Its a small part of the large scheme.

Not a lot of secrets.

Want people to come, get to know the Sooners better. Different perspective on team.

We're going to have FUN getting after it.

Staff
Blend of UNLV staff
Couple of UNLV guys then add.
Need a guy with regional ties. Good feel for area. Important to get big time players.

What guys like Kelvin, Tubbs, etc told him
To a person its a great job.
People who know they understand the tradition, the winning the great players etc.

Higher talent level to bring in OU then UNLV?
You expect to get better players due to Big 12 prestige. Relied a lot on transfers at UNLV. The pool of players available here is larger.

Holy cow, Al knows what Findley Prep is.

About Baseball, why didn't you choose baseball?
Baseball was my first love but I got to the point that I wasn't good enough.

The Animal Radio Hacks were HORRRRRIBLE!!!!!!!

Don't these guys even listen to espn radio to get a clue on how to interview anybody?????

:facepalm:facepalm:facepalm:facepalm:facepalm

Re: Kruger on the Sports Animal tonight at 5:40

Here is my brief summary, even though I did not listen to the interview:

Al: uhhhhh we gotta lonnie kougar here, whats up lonnie

Kruger: good to be w/ you

Al: lonnie uhhhh word is you can't recruit!

Kruger: well we are getting at it right now

Traber: Lon when I was in the big leagues I hit .181 and played in double A out in vegas so why did you come bac to a down trodden OU program that is getting hammered by the NCAA w/ low life no show fans

Kruger well we will try to improve on that

AL: uhhhh lonnie you get to any strip clubs out in Vegas, I bet those dancers out there are packin a lunch

Kruger: what

Re: Kruger on the Sports Animal tonight at 5:40

I really respected how he talked about his kid and opening practices. I think we got a first class coach and I must say hownproud I am that I don't listen to that show regularly.

Re: Kruger on the Sports Animal tonight at 5:40

Q: Who asks a man that has been coaching college basketball for 35 years why he didnt pursue baseball?

A: Jim Traber

He's so sly... he snuck the "I played baseball" bit in without anyone even noticing. What a total douchebag he is.

I felt bad for Coach to have to interact with those two assbags. How do people stand to listen to that station?

Did it twice. Also had to do the ratings junk. Just ridiculous.

* Was asked if he thought he would here this time last week, Kruger said, "Wouldn't have even imagined it." Also said that getting back to his midwest roots in the Big 8/12 was a strong consideration in his decision.

* When asked about OU's history recruiting jucos, Kruger responded, "It's important to get really good players. You would prefers four years players, but if you can find find a good fit that's great too. He also said he had success with D-1 transfers at UNLV.

* When asked about what "he was all about as a coach" he said, "Most importantly, it's about getting good players. We've won only when we've had really good players."

Also said that he knew Capel's teams played hard, were fundamental and, "I'm excited about the guys we've got. We may be the beneficiary of them being older and moving a year forward."

* On him being written about in today's Oklahoman as not being a great recruiter, he replied, "We're always after really good players. Sometimes recruiting is based on what they've done in high school, and not what they've done in college. I'm proud of the guys we've had. I can understand wanting more highly recruited or ranked players, but it's about getting players who get results. We're going to recruit really, really hard. That's a big part of what we'll do here."

* When asked about having open practices, "We don't take what we do all that seriously. We're a small piece of the whole operation. We don't have a lot of secrets. We'll line up and go hard after it every day. There's not a lot of secrets to it. We want people to come by practice. As a parent, I loved taking my kids to practices and sitting there. We're going to win a lot of ball games, we're going to lose some, but it's about linen up every day and doing what's best."

* On his assistants, Kruger said, "It will be a combination and blend of what we've had. We'll bring a couple guys with us from UNLV, then we'll add a couple one we get here. It think it's huge we add someone with experience from the Oklahoma/Texas recruiting area. It takes someone that i think really has a good feel for the area to do that.

* When asked if he could get kids at OU he couldn't get at UNLV, he said, "It will be interesting to see. I think, quite frankly, you expect to being in the Big 12. That's kind of a logical response. We've had really good players at UNLV, and a lot of times had got them after they transferred from other schools. I think the pool of players available definitely will be larger here."

I thought it was super classy how he said that since Capel coached the players he knew they would play hard and be fundamentally sound, and that if we are better next year it's probably that he just got lucky that he got here when the players are a year older. Whether you agree with his comments re: Capel or not, that is a stand-up thing to do.

Also like how he is always quick to say his success is due to the players he's had.

yep, very classy. The King would be proud.

I guess Traber just decided to fly his douchebag flag right from the get-go, so that the new guy wouldn't have any misconceptions about the quality of his interviewers.

if we could convince people to just take ONE month off from those bozos I think we could get them out.
