SoonerIllustrated: Commit in Focus, Akolada Manyang

Coach, I agree with you 99% of the time, but if Thomas and Spangler are around -- both will be all conference calibre players with a proven pedigree at this level. There is no way you keep those guys from starting.

If Manyang is good enough to start over Spangler, we will have the best frontcourt in the country.

He is essentially is playing D1. 6-7 teammates are going D1.

He could go anywhere in the country.

Thomas is better than Spangler.

I'm not putting stock into any juco post player being a huge contributor. Its a big transition from juco to D1. We can barely get juco post players to crack our lineups who were good juco players and yet some of you think that this guy is going to come in and start over Thomas and Spangler or even Lattin. Like Lattin won't be better as a sophmore after playing D1 for a year. There hasn't been a good Juco post player in D1 in a long time. Maybe Ricardo Ratliffe.

He's the #1 post player in the country. not a 100 ranked juco post player.

Maybe Im wrong and he doesnt start but he is a difference maker.

Never been as excited for a player as i am with manyang. He can do it all.

I think Manyang has 2 years to play 2 .... no redshirt year. I doubt it matters much. He graduated from HS in 2012. I'm attaching an interesting article giving some info on his HS years in Minnesota. It also mentions he had a torn MCL in March so he may not be 100% yet.

Manyang background article

If he graduated from H.S. in 2012 and played JC in 2013 and 2014 he should have 3 to play 2.

His other offers were ASU & Minnesota who perennially suck. That's hardly "anywhere".

bgrch is probably right. He averaged 8 & 6 at juco. lol

Raise your hand if you've seen Manyang play in person.

For some perspective, here are the number 1 and 2 ranked juco posts from the last few years, and how they performed in their first year at their new school:

2013 #1: Yanick Moreira - SMU - 6 PPG, 4 RPG, 13.5 MPG
2013 #2: Joseph Uchebo - Pitt - .4 PPG, .8 RPG, 2.6 MPG
2012 #1: Jason Carter - Ole Miss - never played
2012 #2: Titus Rubles - Cinci - 6 PPG, 6 RPG, 22 MPG

The top two juco posts for 2014 are Cinmeon Bowers who went to Auburn, and Shane Henry who went to Va. Tech.

And wasn't CJ Washington a highly-touted juco big when he came in?

I think Manyang can and will be a solid contributor for 2 years at OU. But I don't think he's some can't-miss, home run, day one starter just because he's the top ranked juco big. The last 2 top ranked juco bigs haven't even started for programs like SMU and Mississippi.

Coaches think he could be one and done similar to Amath

That's a very different kind of one-and-done, then. Amath had a solid season for OU, but he left because he'd graduated and wanted to support his family, not because of a junior campaign so stellar that the NBA was beckoning.

I agree they are different. But just passing along info. Im not the only one that has said this.

:facepalm

I'm excited about Manyang too, but let's keep everything in perspective. As skyvue said, Amath didn't leave because he was going League.

So was Victor Avila, and we all know how that turned out. Injuries being a partial factor, of course.

There is no doubt Manyang will play. A ton. I'm just not sure he is going to start over guys that have been in the program as long as Spangler, or have Thomas' scoring ability.

There is a lot of doubt that he will play a lot. If Thomas and Spangler are here next season along with Buford and Lattin...he may see less then 10 mpg.

We've had several, highly recruited juco post players commit to us recently

Bennett
Elliot
Goff
Washington
Thompson
Pattillo
Arent
Hamilton

I even remember us being close to getting Aziz Ndiaye who went to Washington. He was a 4 star juco post player. Number 1 juco post player. He averaged 8.9ppg his senior year at Washington.

Theres no more Taj Grays in juco. You can thank Prep School for that. Lattin will start at center over Manyang. If Thomas is here next year, he will start.

I don't understand why any of you have any faith in any juco player.

You may be comparing apples with oranges.

Manyang is much more mobile than any of those guys except maybe Bennett and Patillo. And a lot taller with more wingspan.

Washington was an undersized inside guy. Arent and Thompson were much too slow for Div I ball.

Patillo had the skills to be a pretty good Div I player. Just didn't work out.

If Thomas is still around next year, Buford will not see the 4 or 5.

Not sure what the rotation will be but I think Manyang will play.
