Spangler - His recruiting?

He committed very early in the process. No one else offered. If he wanted to stay around here and HE trusted his skills, he wouldn't have committed early. Revisionist history sucks.

You have no idea what Spangler looked like in HS.

Maybe he was a bit of a late bloomer. Maybe Capel watched him a couple of times, and Spangler played poorly each time. Maybe he didn't fit what Capel was looking for at the time.

Nobody thinks less of Jeff Capel as a coach than I do. But when a kid is missing anything resembling top offers, other than Gonzaga, I refuse to jump on our coach for not going after him. A LOT of coaches missed on him.

If you'll recall, more than one poster on this board back then felt that Capel was making a mistake by not offering Spangler. BigTime was one of them. Who knows why Capel decided to pass on Ryan? I know he was in on what he saw as bigger fish at the time, and they all opted for other schools in the end.

Having said that, I can't argue with CoolM's sound logic:

Who knows now. Really, it doesn't matter. But I wouldn't just use it as an axe on Capel. He wasn't alone in looking past Spangler and now it's just a HUGE bonus for this Sooner team!!

Fair enough, but anybody that is giving such an opinion on Spangler has a 50/50 shot at getting it right. Either you say he's good enough for OU, or not.

Here is what ESPN's recruiting service said about him:

He should be a solid 4-man at the mid-major level.

And based on his offer list, other than Gonzaga, that is the way a lot of people felt. Coaches and scouts can't get it right 100% of the time. College basketball is littered with guys at small colleges with no big school offers, that are studs. Steph Curry ring a bell? You see them every year in the NCAA Tournament games. The #10 pick in last year's NBA draft went to Lehigh. The #34 pick went to Murray State. I just think Spangler probably didn't project as much back then, or somebody else would have taken a chance at offering him. Gonzaga got it right. Most other schools did not. Simple as that.

And I don't think OU took Thompson over him. I believe the class we had the year Spangler came out was Grooms and Arent. And Arent was a very late pickup. Not sure how many unused schollies we had that season.

Interesting that it was Gongzaga that offered. They are not exactly chopped liver when it comes to basketball. Wonder how they found him way down here?

Concur with everyone who says it worked out for the best that he went there first.

the ol' lumberjack and team captain that promptly began to get 0 minutes... capel didnt realized he sucked even after starting him for multiple games... :facepalm

Anyone think those guys voted Nick Thompson team captain as a joke? WW and TMG had serious attitude issues. Tony Crocker was not a good leader and skipped summer workouts with those guys. Perhaps they had such huge egos they thought they would vote Nick Thompson Captain to make a mockery of the whole team structure?

I for one thank Capel for not recruiting him. Because he didn't...we get Spangler as a Redshirt Sophmore and 2 more years after this. He would be a junior right now.

So why complain. He's here now!

Gonzaga got him as a freshman and didn't use him. We got him when we needed him the most.

I agree with all of you that it's worked out for the best. But on why other schools passed, my theory is that they knew he wanted to go to OU, and if OU(twelve miles down the road) didn't want him, then he must not be major DI talented. IDK what else to think. And btw, yes I did see him multiple times in HS and COULD NOT believe we passed on him. I didn't say much on here, but it was driving me nuts. LOL

I don't disagree that OU was not the only school to miss out on Spangler. Clearly, more than one school made that mistake. What I'm saying is that a local kid his size who was good enough to earn Gatorade POY honors and average better than 29 points and 17 boards his senior year was deserving of a closer look.

If OU was slow-playing him waiting to see what the high-profile players we were in on that season were going to do, it didn't work out too well. As I recall, Ryan committed fairly early in the process because he knew Gonzaga was a good offer. Can't say I blame the kid. In retrospect, it was OU's loss when we failed to give him more attention.

I'll repeat what others have said that I agree with. It worked out for the best in the end. We got an outstanding player with three years to play when Ryan decided to come back home. I'm glad he did!

I definitely agree with that.

Kind of funny looking at the successes we're having, and knowing just about every important piece is a sophomore or younger. Future is bright.

So, are you finally admitting that he was worthy of a scholarship when he transferred, or did you just come here to defend Capel? You certainly haven't been here to pay tribute to Spangler for his performances in other games recently, nor have you said anything about OU's wins over three ranked teams this month, including a road game at Baylor.

Yes but you are a moron.

I once had to file suit against a builder because my clients house was 225 feet too small. The attorney on the other side attempted to explain to me why my client benefited. Like you, that attorney was also a moron.

Heard today RO came out and praised Spang for making him so tough. That is a compliment if I've ever heard one.

Yes...Love Spangler. Watched all the games. Started a new job which has made me a very busy person. I'm a believer. I love everything that has occurred.

We arent just winning...we look like the better team every time, right out of the gate.

I don't know what this thread would have done without these comments. Thanks for adding

Good for you. Glad you're finally on board! If you don't fall off when OU loses a game or two, the rest of the season should be a lot more fun for both of us.

BOOMER!

The article posted about him in the other thread explains his recruitment.

I honestly think Capel didn't recruit Spangler because Spangler played at a very small school and was a big fish in a small pond. I think he just could not be convinced a small school player from a state that only sparingly produces high level players (5-10 in the last 35 years: Tisdale, Price, Griffin, Dumas, Reeves, etc.) was worth consideration when he was going after burger boys.

I don't think he would have recruited Ryan Minor either, who honestly Spangler reminds me of a lot except Spangler doesn't appear to have the offensive game of Ryan's at this point in his career. Maybe he does but he's saddled with playing inside when Minor was able to play the 3. Both have blue-collar work ethic, both are ball hawks and are relentless on the boards and play bigger than their size due to their physicality.

I can tell you one thing, Kelvin would have recruited Spangler every day and twice on Sunday. But that's the type of player he recruited every year.

Its amazing how good they are. They keep getting better. And even if they went on a 10 game losing streak...it wouldn't matter b/c the future is brighter than ever. Glad to be wrong. To add 3 post players to next years roster makes it even better.

WTF difference does it make that we didn't recruit Spangler THREE years ago? He is here now and is playing very well,END OF STOEY.Kruger has us kicking tail and taking names,Why not look foward to a bright future, instead of dwelling on past mistakes and misfortune?
