Spangler - His recruiting?

Regardless of how he ended up here, I feel like we are very blessed to have him now. He also seems to be very level headed for someone that seems to get a lot of elbows and shoves his way, as can be expected for someone near the basket as often as Spangler.

In the meantime, I hope a good nickname appears before he embarrasses Iowa State again :)

Spangler wanted to go to Oklahoma—wanted more than anything to fulfill that childhood dream. But Jeff Capel, then the head coach of the Sooners, never called. Not a single letter with the OU logo came in the mail; there were no invites to summer camps in Norman. There’s a trace of bitterness in Spangler’s voice when he recalls this.

Just when I thought I couldn't think less of our ex-coach even more than I already did...

Spangler worked fastidiously to improve his skill set

Does anyone know if ORU or Tulsa offered him out of high school?

Rivals shows he was offered by Tulsa, TCU, Colorado, and of course Gonzaga. It's clear he took the best offer available to him coming out of high school.

He has a picture on his instagram of him with a beautiful Gonzaga coed (from when he at GU). So, it could have been more than the states of the programs that swayed him to go to Spokane. ;)

Did I mention that Ryan is also an intelligent young man? :D

Badger you are pretty badass at times. Love the meltdown thread.

Does anyone know if OU offered Caleb Green (ORU). Spangler reminds me of him.

I honestly think Capel didn't recruit Spangler because Spangler played at a very small school and was a big fish in a small pond. I think he just could not be convinced a small school player from a state that only sparingly produces high level players (5-10 in the last 35 years: Tisdale, Price, Griffin, Dumas, Reeves, etc.) was worth consideration when he was going after burger boys.

There have been a lot more than 5-10 high level players over that time period. I also think high level would include really good college players that didn't make the NBA. For example, I would call Terry Evans, Ryan Minor and Kevin Bookout high level players and I don't think any of them ever played in the NBA. Those three guys would make a pretty nice core for a team.

Someone like WT could probably list 5-10 Tulsa players that were high level.

Sheldon Williams, the kid at Kentucky, Eaton Thomas, Todd Day (I think he was from Tulsa), Lee Mayberry, Mark Price (you listed Price but I am assuming you meant Brent), Kevin Pritchard and many others have played out of state.

To me, a high level player is a burger boy or someone who gets more than a cup of coffee in the NBA. For that reason, I don't include Minor, Bookout, or Evans. I'm talking about players who are good enough that when you have them you still get to the final 4 or at least elite 8 (Tisdale, Griffin, etc.).

I wouldn't include Pritchard in that list but Mayberry maybe, and Williams for sure. Day wasn't from Tulsa...I think he was from Memphis.

John Starks and Anthony Bowie were a few other great players from Tulsa.

Dang, you are tough judge when Ryan Minor isn't even high level.
