Spangler

I have seen him play many times - followed him thru HS, watched him play in the WCC Tourn. last year with Gonzaga and got to see Gonzaga against WV last year in the first round of the NCAA Tourn and Spangler had 20 plus minutes. I will tell you that the statement by the Zag fan is correct, he will be missed at Gonzaga and he will be one heck of a player for LK and OU. CompOUUnder, how many times have you seen him play? By the way, I have been a Zag fan for many years along with being an OU grad. who loves the Sooner, and we got a jewel when Spangler transfered.

If he was there this year...he wouldn't get any playing time. If he was at Gonzaga next year he wouldn't get much playing time. Dower and Karnowski are better than Spangler and they have 2 more post projects coming in.

You guys should be prepared for him to be about 65-70 percent the player Bookout was. That way there will not be a meltdown. He will be a nice rotation guy, but we need to get some studs to go with him.

I've spoken with a couple of guys "in the know" regarding Ryan and they both had nothing but glowing things about how hard he works and is improvement during this transfer year.

He will be the best rebounder since Blake. He will battle and be able to defender taller post players. He and Bennett will be defensive upgrades in the post from the past 3 years.

Spangler and Amath should be a nice combo inside next year. Hopefully Amath can make a similar jump in scoring and confidence that Ro made this year. He needs to add some weight on his frame IMO.

Hope your 'in the know' guys aren't anywhere near this board. Most here only qualify as 'under the assumption' and 'complete guesswork' guys.

Osby has been very high on Spangler. M'baye does need to add weight and have more focus on offense and defense. Gives up way too many easy baskets defensively by trying to overplay and/or block shots. With Hamilton coming in and Bennett here for a year we should have good depth at the 4 and 5. We have already seen that against smaller lineups Cam can play the 4. If we get a shooting guard (good 3 pt threat) and 3 freshman guards improve their shooting I"m really excited about taking another step forward next year.

Just my opinion, based upon observing him in the exhibition games, but I thought he was our best "post" player. By that I mean, he was our best interior defender and rebounder. I didn't see him play at Gonzo. So, I have had a limited opportunity to see him.

But, it is just like watching Pledger or Mbuye, if you watched some games you would think one thing about them, and if you watched other games, you wouldn't think they needed to be on a D1 roster.

However, he is big, very tough, active, well conditioned, and skilled within at least 10 feet. In addition, he was very successful in high school (all american) and got plenty of minutes, with success, at Gonzo, as a freshman. And finally, he will have played every day against Ro and Mbuye for a year. So, you never know, but there is certainly reason to be optimistic about his being able to help us next year. Like bigtime, I would expect Amath to improve, like Mcgee and Ro, did and provide a more consistent scoring punch next year. I'm all for getting some great players, but think Spangler will be pretty good piece to the puzzle.

He played 145 minutes at Gonzaga.

Tyler Neal played 175 minutes this year for OU.

I don't expect his net contribution to approach what Osby did this past year, until maybe his senior year. Yes, he will be a better rebounder. And yes, he is probably a little better in the paint. but he isn't a guy you can give the ball to and let him create his own shot. He shot FT's poorly at Gonzaga, though limited in number. He doesn't have the versatility that Ro had to switch on a screen, or hedge the pick and roll like a guard almost. He doesn't have 3 point range on his jumper.

Not trying to bash the kid, but he won't contribute like Ro did this year. And what he does bring to the table is an entirely different skill set.

WT, I would agree with your assessment of Spangler and also that he has a different skill set than Ro. My earlier post was merely to express the opinion that when the smoke clears, and if lon has to play him in Ro's spot, we will be ok, at least if Mbuye picks up his offensive game.

Speaking of bigs, we have Hamilton coming in next year. He is actually a big. Anyone seen him play, and if so, what does he look like?

I dont know where you get your info. but I have a close friend who lives in Spokane and is a big time Zag fan who told me not even 3 weeks ago that he had a conversation with one of the Zag coaches who said they would have redshirted Spangler this year and he would become a starter next year, so I would imagine Karnowski would be sitting.

There was a quote from Ryan earlier this year where he said when he found out he was going to be red-shirted at Gonzaga, it made his decision to come here easier. He said if he was going to redshirt no matter what, he would rather be here.

Thanks, I guess my info. was correct then

all i know is i dont wanna hear for once in the offseason the rumors of a legendary like player on the team that we've never seen before aka M'Baye and being one and done HAHA

i expect him to be a good player but please lets be realistic for once

Reading old posts about Spangler is always fun.

Yes, and these old posts bring out some interesting facts: (1) We have some great Sooner fans/posters on this board; (2) we have some outright clowns who, in reality, know they are clowns and are actually proud of it; and (3) we have a few clowns who have actually convinced themselves that they are college basketball experts.

Old threads like this one can be as revealing as they are interesting.

You nailed it here. Good post.

I was wrong on Spangler and I'm glad. The kid is great. And he keeps getting better.
