Seems like Tramel has mentioned him more than once lately. Is he a legitimate candidate?

"Opie" Alford? Berry must be spiking his coffee with some really strong stuff...

I hope not.

If he is, OU basketball is dead. He's a horrible coach. Did ZERO at Iowa.

I'm not a huge Alford guy, wouldn't want him at OU.

He has done a really good job at New Mexico though...they will be a tournament team next year, only losing one player.

That's what everybody said about NM this year after last season was over. The same thing they said about his Iowa teams yet he only took them to the NCAA 2 or 3 times and they were all flukes because he won the Big 10 tournament as a high seed.

In their defense, Dobson went pro when he shouldn't have (was the reigning MWC player of the year over Jimmer) and they didn't get UCLA transfer Drew Gordon eligible (all-conference player) until semester. In addition, Will Brown their starting C last year was kicked off the team before the season.

NM probably would of beat BYU (for a third time) if Dairise Gary doesn't go out with an injury at the beginning of the second half...then they're playing for an auto bid against SDSU.

As I said, Alford is a great coach for a school like UNM but I wouldn't want him at OU. To act though like he hasn't vastly turned that program around after Ritchie McKay is just uninformed. Don't forget BYU is leaving the MWC and SDSU is losing key players.

His hair and the Oklahoma wind......not a good fit

Agreed...and he has kush gig at New Mexico. Gets paid a very nice salary (around $1.2mm I think), a remodeled Pit, and can get into the tourney without winning the conference tournament.

I don't want him at OU...he already flopped at another power 6 school. Some people are just good fits for mid-majors, not high-majors. I think he is one of those guys.

Iowa before Alford tended to win 20-22 games, finish around 3-5 in the Big 10 and made the NCAA tournament about 60% of the time.

Alford won 18-21 games, finished around 4-7, and made the NCAA about 40% of the time.

Since replacing him, they've absolutely stunk.

He's not a great coach, but there are a lot of worse ones out there (and for the record, I would absolutely hate it if MU hired him and would probably laugh if OU did... but he's not really THAT bad).

It is Alford's fault. He recruited bad guys (not players, people) and drove that program into the ground. Iowa fans would laugh us out of the country for even suggesting hiring Alford. I know some big money Iowa donors. Alford made ZERO friends in Iowa. I promise you that if his name even came up seriously around our program, I'd be done.

If Iowa didn't happen Alford looks pretty good. But that's also like saying if BCG didn't drink he would probably be our coach.

I'd take Alford over anyone else from the "Duke coaching tree" at the moment. He also has a son who's a 10th-grader and is already an all-stater in the large school class. His older son (a senior) is going to walk-on with his program.

If nothing else, it'd be interesting to see the responses locally if Alford's name came up in print in Albuquerque. Alford does have one thing going for him that's key for the job here - the media is scared of him. So he gets a pass for only going to the "dance" once in four seasons.
