I would be even worse in a state like, say, California.I'm sure it didn't help that they were young black men of color in a state like Oklahoma...

Okay?O please, Obama Won my state!

I'm sure if you had a HS son that was caught in a car with kids with drugs, you'd just chalk it up to bad luck.
:facepalm
Depends on the "drugs." If it were pot, I honestly wouldn't care that much.
I was around people with pot all throughout high school and college, and I turned out fine.
I wouldn't be mad about the pot. I would be mad that he put himself in that position. If you are a high D-1 prospect, you have to know better. Whether it is fair or not, you are held to a different standard than your friends. You can't hang out with them, if they're going to get you in trouble.
but I also think it shows something about the company he has been keeping.
Without knowing any specific details, I'll just say this --
I would be willing to bet that the vast majority of all high school students have friends who use some kind of illegal substance, whether it's pot or booze or whatever.
They just don't all get caught.

So you think something like 75% of HS students regularly do drugs or drink alcohol?
I don't think these mean the same thing
You are right, misread that the first time.
But knowing somebody that does those things, and knowing somebody enough to be in a car with the, is still two different things. You can't help who you go to school with, and to some extent, have to interact with. You can control who you spend your free time away from school with.

I am not a parent but if this is truly your position I would contend you are not a good parent. A parent should not condone, accept, tollerate, or ignore drug or alcohol use by their child. I believe a parent should set rules not be a friend to their child. (I don't mean you can't be a friend just that being a parent comes first and requires some boundaries.)
