Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim hit and killed a pedestrian with his car while on a highway after the Orange's game against Louisville in New York.

Onondaga County district attorney Bill Fitzpatrick told WSYR that the man was outside of his car on Interstate 690 following another unrelated accident which occurred due to bad weather. Syracuse police told Syracuse.com and USA Today that Boeheim's vehicle hit the man late Wednesday night. Police were called to the scene at 11:22 p.m.

The 74-year-old had just coached Syracuse to a 69-49 win against Louisville at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.

Jorge Jimenez, 51, has been identified as the victim of the collision. He was transported to Upstate University Hospital before being pronounced dead. Police said Jimenez was a passenger in a car that lost control on the highway before hitting a guardrail. He was walking near the vehicle when he was hit by Boeheim's car.

Police said that both drivers tested negative during field sobriety and alco-sensor tests. Fitzpatrick said Boeheim was driving at an appropriate speed and is cooperating with the police investigation.

must be nice to receive the benefit of the doubt when you are a celebrity

He tested negative and is cooperating. Do you think they should just lock him up and throw away the key before determining whether he did anything wrong?

I think he would have been taken in and held if he was a normal oerson

What are you talking about? He hit a guy who was walking in the middle of the interstate, and he wasn't drunk. Nobody would be detained on that.

Where did it say he was in the middle of the interstate. What I read said he was on the side of the road.

When that happens it is usually being on your phone while driving and that is a detainavle crime

"Facts" from "news" stories tend to evolve if you wait long enough. Before we condemn someone, it is wise to wait for the more factual information.

umm...yeah. Ya'd think after the last couple of major "cry wolf" issues in the media lately folks would learn...

How would they know at the scene if he was on his phone?

I'm just saying...the way the situation is handled with cops b/t celebrities and the average civilian is way different. The benefit of the doubt is given to celebrities.

Yall need to get your panties out of your wad.

There are plenty of news stories where a person is held during an accident like this b/c they suspect distracted driving was teh cause.

When I was in college, I was delivering a car to Texas for my father (he owned an automobile dealership) and while I was aware that I was slightly drowsy, I felt fully in control.

At some point, though, I heard a honk (thank goodness for that driver, whoever he or she was) and came to to realize I was on the shoulder of the highway, barrelling toward a man who had pulled over to the side of the road and was standing behind his car with the trunk open.

I had only a split-second to whip my car to the left and get back onto the highway (I didn't even have time to make sure there was not a car there that I would be swerving into) and thank heaven I avoided disaster. I have often thought how different my life would have been (if I had survived that impact--not to mention the impact on the poor guy I'd have hit and his family) if that person hadn't honked their horn to awaken me.

All of which is to say, I can sympathize with Boeheim (and even more so with the poor fellow he hit). What an awful situation. I'm not looking to make excuses for Boeheim, if he was on his phone or in some other way responsible, but it's a rare driver who hasn't at one time or another been momentarily distracted long enough for something horrible to happen.

I just saw another update that said the man was off the road when hit.

Regardless it is a terrible situation. I may have jumped the gun do to my dislike of Boeheim however I think my statement stands. If this was a regular civilian, there would be a lot more investigation going on.

I don't know what exactly happened, and we may not know the exact details for a while. They talked to him, tested him, and they're still in contact with him. I don't know what else you want.

I don't know either...I think I was just hangry when i posted

I knew you would be back to your normal clown posting. You just can't resist it. I think this is the only message board that you haven't yet been banned (for clown posting) at some point, right? :ez-roll:

One thing in his favor is he is not a flight risk.

No, he wouldn't. I would meet your normal person criteria, and I wasn't "taken in" when this happened to me. The two most important factors are: "Was Beoheim drinking?" and "Was he driving at an inappropriate speed?". If the answers are "No" (which they were for both Beoheim and me), he's not getting taken in. PERIOD.

Actually the second hasn't been confirmed yet.
And there is a third...was he distracted and/or on his phone
