Tennessee's Martin Heading to Cal

Seems like a weird move. Maybe he just likes the west coast. But seems like he had some good talent at UT, and only 2 major programs in the SEC to compete with for usually about 4-5 tournament slots.

Most of the fans at UT hated him.

He left before the ship started going down. His best player returning is Richardson. The other 4 starters are gone. He has 3 starters returning to Cal. Tennessee was not going to be good with or without him.

He didn't leave cause the ship was going down, he left because he received zero respect from the fan base throughout the season and after taking the team to the sweet 16. The players at Tennessee actually supported him leaving the program, because they even knew he wasn't treated well.

Well, to be fair, he didn't take them to the Sweet 16 until the end of the season, so it's hard for fans to give him respect for it during the season. Instead, he nearly missed the tournament with a team that should have been a protected seed. Then he got them to play to, but not above, their potential during the tournament.

They improved their win total each season...

The fans were pretty brutal before, during and after the season. When he turned down the Marquette job, many fans spewed their displeasure with his decision to stay. From all reports I read, he wasn't treated well by the administration at Tennessee, either. Perhaps the Vols don't understand where they are on the pecking order for men's basketball. Their tradition points to at best a middle-of-the-pack team in ANY major conference.

I hope Martin succeeds at Cal...Tennessee didn't deserve him.

Vol fans all loved Bruce Pearl, one of the highest order of cheaters in college basketball.

I though Martin did a solid job, the cupboard wasn't great when he got there.

to quote Charles Barkley "It's the SEC if you ain't cheatin you ain't tryin" Of course the would love a cheater that won them games.
