Texas student newspaper writer tells top recruit to go elsewhere

wow just wow. WTH were they thinking?

His thought process is simple. If he writes a "come to UT" article, no one reads it because no one cares about a school paper writing positive stories about high school recruits. But if he writes the opposite, it gets attention.

so in other words, he lacks creative ability so he has to resort to this kind of crap to get attention.

Somebody email him and tell him to right a followup about why the recruit should go to OU

Not exactly.

Creativity at a college newspaper still probably gets few readers. When was the last time you went to a college newspaper's website because you heard about some amazing story some kid wrote? Probably never.

I go to read stories to gain information....not to see who wrote it. I don't read articles from shock jocks b/c its ridiculous. He lacks the ability to make a name for himself with his writing so he produces crap to gather views.

Anyone heard on rumors on where Turner is going to end up? I haven't followed that situation for a while.

That's great, but it's not the norm.

Example: Go look how many followers Jason Whitlock has on Twitter. Or Bill Simmons. The name matters. As a columnist, you build a reputation for having opinions that people care about. They might not agree with them, but they read them.

And again, this is a kid. Saying he lacks the ability to do anything is a given. He's working on it. That's the point.

Maybe you aren't interested in that type of work, but millions of people are.

And to be clear, the writing is awful. But the idea behind it—pinpoint a position that will generate interest and attempt to argue that point, even if it isn't popular—is justifiable. It has value, and not just in the Skip Bayless sort of way; plenty of columnists make a living without being on that level.

Perhaps but somebody should have said no to this article. It would be one thing for the student paper to expose corruption, NCAA violations or other bad press for the school but to just write a negative story solely to write a negative story is ridiculous.

So, you don't buy into all of this 3rd estate, freedom of the press, 1st amendment stuff?

I never said the government should stop him. I fully support the first amendment but business decisions should trump stupidity. I even said the student paper should expose corruption or NCAA violations.

Everything should trump stupidity. But, it seldom does.
