I had never been in MSG before the renovations, but I thought it looked nice for such an old venue. I love the seating set-up. Most NBA arenas have an upper deck, like Loud City in OKC, that segregates the crowd into two completely separate factions; however, in MSG the crowd just flows together, and I think that has a lot to do with the energy in that place (i.e. spontaneous chants originating from the cheap seats).I've been to MSG for a college game and concert, but never an NBA game. Love the place, I heard the renovations are nice as well.
How is his book, I've been meaning to read it.
I'm a few hundred pages into Simmons' book, and I love it so far. There's a lot of great historical info that most fans wouldn't know unless they were diehard NBA junkies in the 60s and 70s who subsequently read a bunch of books about the era. If you like his NBA articles, you'll love the book. He also takes a ton of shots at Kobe, so I'm sure you would enjoy it anyway.
