CokeSooner made a good point in another thread that the only result thus far that can really be called a surprise is the loss to Chaminade. All of the other games have ended as many of us expected from a win/loss perspective. Therefore, the next three games are going to tell us a lot:

Gardner Webb
Oral Roberts
Cincinnati (OKC)

We had better win at least one of these three games. If not, well then the powers that be at OU need to start thinking about making some difficult choices regarding Capel's immediate future.

Although it is true that the loss to Chaminade has been the only unexpected loss of the season thus far; I think most of us would agree that we expected the team to at least keep a couple of these games close, or get out to a 2-0 lead or something.

we were very fortunate to beat north carolina central at home, so it's not about wins and losses. but the next two better be wins. forget cincy. cronin is going to clown capel.

We have to win those next two, no doubt about it. What slim fan support we still have will dry up and we're only have about 2k or so for the rest of the home games not named OSU, KU and Texas.

Why would you go to those three games. That is like skiing to be beaten. I think. Texas and ku win by 10+ maybe even 20+

The arena will be full, but it will be orange or blue depending on opponent. Its gonna be sad to watch us get killed in the LNC with the majority of the crowd cheering for our biggest conference rivals

Because some of us are actually OU fans despite the team's record or the betting line. I know that concept may be hard for you to understand, but it does happen....

Exactly.

Judging from the attendance at the games so far, there aren't many people who count as "actual OU fans" by that standard.

You're right, there aren't many actual OU basketball fans.

And antagonizing those who don't pass loyalty tests is a great way to ensure that stays the case for a long, long time.

That's fine. I'd rather people like DenverSooner who only support the team and the program during the good times would have no affiliation at all. If you're only a "fan" during great seasons, then you're actually a fan of winning, not of the university or the team itself.

Furthermore, it's quite a stretch to say that antagonizing those like Denver will suddenly make them lesser "fans" than what they already are. It's implausible to assume that Denver will not come to a game during our next winning season because someone criticized him on a message board.

To some, not attending games or contributing money to the basketball program is their way of supporting the program. If you think the only way for OU basketball to get better is for there to be a change, you have to make your voice heard one way or another, and usually that means the pocketbook. All of us should have that point. It's inevitable that it will be different for each of us. Jeff Capel is not my boyfriend. I do not need to support him unconditionally. He is a basketball coach for my favorite team, and so that means I hope he does incredibly well, but I shouldn't just keep clapping louder if I think the program is collapsing.

Denver is a great fan and it's not that he's going to be affected by people being critical of his brand of fandom, the point is that someday I may be. And as someone that is far from perfect, I'm not too wild about that.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. And the thing is, you're right. FWIW Capel will absolutely be gone if this happens, IMO. And that has nothing to do with my personal opinions on the team, I'm not sure anyone can argue that that wouldn't be an absolute disaster.

So by attending games, you're only supporting Jeff Capel? The program is much bigger than Jeff Capel. When I attend games, I'm supporting much more than just a coach.

If you stop attending games, you're hurting the program financially. You're hurting recruiting significantly. You're hurting the current athletes.

Sorry, but I'm not going to ever call someone a great fan who refuses to attend games because there's a good possibility that OU will lose.

Of course not and I said nothing of the sort. Hello, strawman.

What I said was that if one thinks the program is past the point of recovery absent a change at the coaching position, it's perfectly reasonable to put your foot down and let the powers that be know that you will be spending your money elsewhere until that change is made.

I've had season tickets for years, but this is hard. I may not go to those games. If you think about it it's kind of like watching your dog get beat, why would you want to do that for 2 hours.

I must be masochistic about choosing which teams to root for, how else to explain that I'm a bigger OU basketball fan than football fan. :)
