Today SMU is interviewing.......

What?!!! Larry Brown is interested in the SMU job? :facepalm

Been rumored down here for a couple weeks that he was in the mix...hate this idea.

I read on twitter last night that there is talk of hiring Brown while also bringing in Buzz Peterson as coach in waiting.

LOL

I think Larry Brown is exactly what SMU needs.

Was talking with Fran F. yesterday and he believes, as do I, that both SMU and TCU can become nationally relevant teams in the not too distant future - based on both becoming high-major stops, via their affiliations with the Big East and Big 12 respectively; and their location in the middle of one of the densest populations of elite talent found anywhere.

To capitalize on that, both schools need that one big-time prospect (top 25-type) to sign on the dotted line. After that, it will likely be a cascade of area riches to follow. I'm not sure both can be successful at the same time, so it's most likely a race to see which one can become relevant in the eyes of the high-major type kids from this area first.

In the case of SMU, I know most of the elite DFW kids personally on some level, and three things ring consistent in what they're looking for:

  1. Playing high-major ball, i.e. TV, competition, recognition, etc
  2. Using school as a stepping stone to the NBA/pro ball
  3. Facilities and location

For my money, Larry Brown would provide the best chance of quick success for SMU. He obviously won't be around long, but I think these early days are a sprint for the two schools, not a marathon. He would lend INSTANT credibility to the school with all his experiences and accomplishments.

If he came into my house and sat down and started talking about national championships, Olympic gold medals, and NBA championships, and how my kid could achieve those at SMU; I'd be hard-pressed to not give it serious thought. The guy absolutely has respect when it comes to those things.

If I'm SMU, I'm going hard after him, and asking him to bring someone on staff that he can groom to take over at some point. Dallas area recruiting is the KEY to this job, and players in this area are all about credibility - which is why the elite have always looked outside DFW to play in college.

BTW, I've got a source that says an SMU announcement is eminent. Possibly even today.

This job has been open for over a month and Orisini can't seem to get it done. As I said, Brown has been in the mix for a couple weeks, why hasn't this thing been closed yet if he is such a great candidate?

You're also asking him to bring in someone to take over at a later date, essentially you are interviewing for two head coaches. Just think Brown's age is a huge deterrent and can't really see him taking the necessary steps on the recruiting trail.

I totally understand where you're coming from with his age and your reservations. However, this area is crying out for a guy with real basketball juice to take over one of these two programs. NCAA, Olympic, and NBA championships certainly qualifies him.

SMU is close to home, so family and friends can come watch them play. The boosters and Dallas connections are off the charts. The facilities are fixing to be top notch, and all the guys talk about loving the bevy of rich females that attend there.

Add a guy with Brown's basketball heritage to that, and you'll get one of the top kids to come. Once that happens, it's downhill from there. All you have to do is recruit DFW.

I used to live right next to SMU in Highland Park. Don't see any way hiring Larry Brown or being in the Big East matters. TCU has a better chance of doing something since they will be playing Texas, Baylor, OU, etc. Doak Walker is dead & so is SMU.

Hope I am wrong, would love for SMU to get better so I could enjoy some college basketball 10 minutes away from my house. They were so bad this year.

I'll admit, it's a stretch, but I'd take that SMU job in a heart beat. Built in success all within an hour's-drive radius!

No evidence of this. The program is not on the map and never has been. The remnants of the Big East won't change this.

I really like your outlook on the game. Always look forward to reading your posts. Your insight and perspective leads me to believe you've played the game beyond high school.

Had no idea you were in Dallas. I'd love to have some good college basketball in the metroplex to watch as well.

Sorry, but what are you saying? No evidence of what?

My statement was there's built-in success in DFW. That success is avail for ANY program in Dallas if they'll recruit right and convince only a small portion of the talent to stay here to play in front of family and friends.

If you think a school now in the Big East and a school now in the Big 12 isn't enough to open doors to metroplex players that were closed before, you're greatly misinformed and out of touch with these athletes.

Again, I'd take this very job, recruit the heck out of DFW, and win with homegrown talent - and win BIG. I know many of these kids that are excited by the fact that major BCS schools now reside in their own back yard. Now it's up to the coaches to take advantage of that excitement and get their signatures on the dotted line.

Larry Brown mailed it in for years with several NBA teams after he won his title. Why makes anyone think that taking a job at a depressingly bad college basketball program is going to make him get out there and bust his ass as necessary to get top recruits?

Yes, recruit like heck local kids who come to Moody and see death warmed over and you will end up with the kids nobody else wants. That's never going to change. As for kids wanting to stay in Dallas? No evidence of that. TCU has a chance to get some kids because they will be able to play against Texas, OU, etc plus TCU is a much nicer campus than SMU.

SMU will get their pick after Texas, Baylor, OU, Okie State, Texas Tech & TCU at best. ANd that is the best case scenario. It's probably worse than that.

Agree. Might sell a few tickets though which is a good thing.

Appreciate the kind words DAZE. Played a little post high school, but quickly was burned out from the constant AAU circuit in HS and just needed to give it up competively. That and I was sick of getting taken to church by athletic swingmen.

I tried to get into SMU basketball when I was in grad school on The Hilltop, but it was a beat down to watch. Just really disappointed to see the talent in the area and so few kids develop under Doherty's tenure. They've got some nice pieces right now, but Matt just couldn't put it together. Furthermore, going out and hiring June Jones for $2mil delayed Doherty's firing IMO. I am in the middle between you and Boca, think SMU does have a bit tougher road ahead than TCU given conference proximity and this long coach hiring process isn't helping at all. The facilities will look great once they are done and I think the fanbase is ready to support a winner because football hasn't planned out as they had hoped.

Don't see as much HS/AAU ball in this area as you probably do, but I see quite a bit and there is way too much talent in the Metroplex for TCU and SMU to finish where they have in the Mountain West and Conference USA standings.

Ask yourself this: 5-10 years ago, how unfathomable would it have been to think that a miserable basketball program like Baylor would be landing the kind of recruiting classes it has been recently? I think Baylor was almost EXACTLY like you described SMU, during that time. Yet, they've landed two highly-ranked and likely lottery picks and a possible third in the past couple of years (two of which, are from where? Thats right, DFW)

I assure you Waco, TX is nowhere near the attraction Dallas, TX is to these players and their families. Baylor also has absolutely ZERO talent within an hours-drive radius, when compared to DFW.

The fact that Perry Jones' mother has on numerous occasions said she wanted Perry close to home, is enough evidence to give credence to my statements. There are MANY more like her in this area that want their babies in high-major conferences as close to home as possible.

If Baylor can do it, there's absolutely NO valid reason SMU and TCU, being right in the heart of this talent pool, can't as well. Again, to think otherwise, flies directly in the face of the facts.

Baylor was pretty loaded with talent when they got crushed by the NCAA. Remember the guys who transferred out?

What Baylor has that SMU doesn't?

1. There are probably 50 times more baptist moms than methodist.
2. They can recruit against Texas by telling kids to beat em instead of joining them.

Those 2 items alone dwarf SMU.

When I lived in Highland Park I thought it was ridiculous they wasted that money on the football stadium. Had they expended the same resources on basketball they had a chance to build something. But now the game is over and they got left out while TCU is in.
