There was OU’s run to the Rose Bowl and Mayfield’ s season for the ages. Young became the first player to ever lead the country in both points and assists. OU also won national titles in softball, men’s golf and men’s and women’s gymnastics. The retirement of Bob Stoops kept OU in the national news even during the heat of summer.
In the past year, Norman has been like the Washington, D.C., of college sports.
Now, as spring sets in, Mayfield and Young are both turning pro. Like Blake Griffin and Sam Bradford and Buddy Hield before them, OU has been home to some of the most popular and dynamic athletes in the entire country.
“I think it helps validate what we try to present to student-athletes, or you think about even students, that you could have the highest goals, dreams or aspirations for yourself and accomplish them all right here at the University of Oklahoma,” athletic director Joe Castiglione said earlier in the year. “There’s nothing holding anybody back. Just one example after another.”
