I think (sadly) this is as spot-on as it gets. It's the ole "addition by subtraction" next year. Of course we'll be worse, but there were just so many deficiencies on this team this year, that I can't help believe will be better next year without Trae. I'm hardly blaming him for all of them, but it's just very frustrating to see him so far removed from the team. I went to the home Texas game and the road Kansas game two days later and it was basically like it was everyone and Trae. He left the court right after the Texas game and didn't do the lap (while the entire rest of the team did), then, at The Phog, the entire team was out stretching and then shooting, and he comes out 15 minutes later by himself, Sure, in the grand scheme of things it might not be a big deal, but it would be cool if you're best player, leader, etc., was the one SETTING the example, and not just doing whatever he feels like.
The even sadder thing is he desperately needs another year in college, if for no other reason to become more mature and bulk up and build stamina, but he's probably priced himself out, and I don't say that b/c of the money he'd be getting. It's best to just move on IMO
Just so I'm clear, you're boldly predicting that we'll be simultaneously worse and better next season? That will be quite a trick.
You are making huge assumptions here. You have no idea why Trae might have come out late in Lawrence -- perhaps he was dinged up and a trainer was working on the injury. Do you honestly think Lon Kruger would simply look the other way while true prima dona behavior was occurring?
It's amazing (make that appalling) how many of our fans are so quick to throw a Hall of Fame coach under the bus based on assumptions formed by attending a game or two or even just watching the Sooners on TV, but we've seen a good number of such posts in recent weeks.
I'm not saying Coach Kruger doesn't deserve some blame for our second-half struggles (or that Trae doesn't, either) -- there's plenty of blame to go around. But singling out Trae (and, by implication, Coach Kruger) is unfounded; it lets the rest of the players, every single one of whom was inconsistent at best, off scot-free, not to mention the assistants.
I would take Trae back in a heartbeat next season, and then I'd hope that the McGusty we saw late in the season would show up three or four months next year instead of the disappearing act he pulled for the majority of this season; that Doolittle, who showed some signs of life late in the season, would get back to at least the level of play he displayed as a freshman; that James would finally show some consistency in his game. All those players were MUCH more to blame for our troubles this season than Trae was, and it's mind-boggling that anyone would suggest otherwise. And while he was solid on defense, there's no reason Odomes shouldn't score more than he did this year (at least he could hit 65-70% of his free throws).
I'm confident Manek will be improved and that McNeace will continue to improve too. If Jamal Bieniemy brings anything to the table as a freshman, and if Freeman and Polla could contribute even a little bit, we could easily be three or four wins better next season, if not more.
But take Trae out of the equation and we'll have to see huge improvement from almost everyone on the team.

Somewhat the same. It's more of "I'm always the guy who tells Trae opposite of what he is thinking, to make sure he's absolutely sure of what he does"
Like, he wanted Trae to go to a blue blood, because Trae wanted to go to OU. So Rayford pushed other schools, to see how confident Trae was in going to OU. In the end he wanted to go to OU. Now, Trae wants to leave, and probably has thought a lot about leaving throughout the year. So Dad is once again going "yeah, but if you stay....."
Rayford always gives the opposite opinion to make sure Trae is 100% sure in what he wants. And I kind admire that by Rayford. Give a differing opinion to challenge someone to make sure they believe in what they want.
I should have clarified; better in the sense of team morale, more cohesiveness, effort, desire, etc. Trae was awesome this year and so fun to watch, but when you refuse to play defense, jump for a loose ball, and take 30 foot jumpers that are not in the flow of the offense, it tends to bring the team down, or in the case of the defense angle, they tend to follow.
I also did not mention LK once in this thread, and the last thing I want is him gone (which I said as much in one of my first posts on this site). It's utter blasphemy that people think he should be fired or retire. So, to say I am throwing him under the bus makes no sense to me.
Lol. It's just coach speak. Rayford does not want trae coming back. Use your brain
I agree about Rae just saying coach speak. He doesn't want trae to stay.
Personally I would love to se trae stay because I like watching him play. His passing amazes me.
From the OU programs' perspective I think it's best if trae goes. this group needs to grow up themselves and I dont think they do that best with trae on the floor. nothing against trae at all - he needs to be playing with the pros.
Trae is an NBA type player. 1 on 1 ball, drive and shoot. OU players need team basketball that moves side to side, because they aren't world burners at 1 on 1 ball. So both sides would benefit from Trae leaving.
If he stayed, I'd be really hopeful that Kruger takes the keys back and forces them to run an actual offense, rather than letting Trae create for everyone. Backdoor screens, off ball movement, etc. Our offense is way to stagnant. The final four team wasn't stagnant because Buddy, Cousins, etc. all came off screens away from the ball, which is what we should be running now.
