Trae Young's father wants him to consider returning to Oklahoma | Yahoo

Plenty left to prove at the collegiate level, but nothing develops you to be an NBA star like the NBA. Every additional year he stays in college adds to the time until he gets his first non-rookie deal. There's no way he'll fall out of the lottery, and he'll never be a #1 pick. Even Steph (his best case scenario) wasn't even a consideration for that.

How many lottery picks are there?

He is leaving for sure! Ray wants him to go. He gave notice awhile back to his job that he was leaving to be Trae's manager.

TY will be a wealthy man in a few months.

OU desperately needs somebody to run the point. They also need to have the guys who are here learn to dribble the ball.

You are truly insufferable. Have you ever read the crap you post?

I'm sure there's some JUCO you think we should sign instead of bringing Trae back, though.

Oh, come on sperry.... Don't be so dramatic.

Why don't you just post your opinion about the content of the article?

1. I think he's gone.

2. I saw some anonymous quotes on Twitter last night from NBA scouts (maybe GM's) that all said they wouldn't be comfortable taking TY in the lottery.

3. I'm not sure we want him back. Sounds weird, but I think his style created all kinds of chemistry issues. We'll almost certain be worse without him, but I can't help but think the long-term health of the program might be better if he leaves. Think we'd definitely see a guard transfer if TY is back. Might see one leave either way.

Thanks for confirming what most of us already knew, Vbdad. I think we saw through the little rays of hope Rayford was throwing out.

Dad's going to be his manager? I'm sure that will work out well.

Last point is excellent. Wings need to be able to put the ball on the floor and create without walking, charging, or dribbling the air out of the ball. Our guys were awful at that all season.

This is what I'm stuck on... Even if his dad, NBA scouts, etc., say that another year would be best, what would he coming back to?

Whatever issues that were happening on/off the court, are they going away when they only lose one player (to graduation, anyway)? Are the new players - assuming there's not a huge roster turnover before next year - going to solve it?

Like what WTSooner said, without him they probably win 12-15 games max next year barring some minor miracle. But with him it could be a full season of what we saw since the middle of January unless there are some major adjustments from top to bottom (Lon included).

I hope and pray Trae returns. But, if he and his family decide to take the money and run, then I wish him the best.

He is the best pure point I have ever seen at OU. I have been watching since the late 60's. And, I don't see a good replacement on the team right now. If he improved, maybe Shep, but I don't feel good about that at the moment.

We need perimeter shooters in the worse way and I don't see any on the team outside of maybe Manek next year. We need wings that can get to the rim. Agree with V, our dribbling is poor.

Interesting. Also interesting why his dad would be saying that he "would like to see Trae come back" in a recent newspaper article. If what you are saying is true, which I have no reason to believe it's not... Why does his dad say stuff like that?

Same reason a lot of people stay stuff like that. In the coaching world, it's called "coach speak/talk". No difference with other people relating to other things. They aren't ready to publicly declare for the draft. Gotta talk the talk in that case. I suppose he could say nothing, but most people choose to create stories. Nature of people, I suppose.

More from Trae postgame...

“I think I’ll remember the down times, because when we were down, that’s when we came even closer together,” Young said. “Not just on the court, but off the court. We started hanging out, going to team dinners, that’s when we got even closer.”

“Right now, my main focus is my teammates,” Young said. “Those are my brothers, and those are the people I care about most right now. It’s tough after a loss to think about anything else besides that. … Later this week, I’ll sit down with my family, and we’ll discuss that. But right now that’s not my main focus. My main focus is my teammates.”

Lattin on Young said:
“He’s an outstanding player. I wish him the best of luck going forward."

more Lattin on Young said:
“Trae’s a really good teammate,”

James on Young said:
“That’s my brother for life,” James said. “I’m here if he needs me for anything. I know I can call him. He’s a great player, great all-around player.”

McGusty on Young said:
“I hope so,” McGusty said, asked if he thinks Young will come back. “I don’t know. I don’t really talk to him too much about that. We just talk about what’s going on now and college and stuff like that. But I think he’s probably the best player in college basketball. If he comes back, we’re more than welcoming arms.”

Idon't think Ray will be his agent. Manager is a different deal.

Ray would say it because they don't want people thinking that the decision was made.

FYI I heard about the job notice from a guy in that business with absolutely no connection to OU. I can't confirm that it is true.

The last point here is key. There was more pressure on Trae here because our out her guards are not especially good ball handlers.

I could actually see James or Odomes running the point for some minutes next season but either one would have to improve their ball handling even to take on doing this for 5-10 minutes per game.

But they have to get a grad transfer to run the point for 28-32 MPG, someone who can handle the ball w/o turning it over, distribute it to people in positions they can score, and score 8-12 PPG.

I think (sadly) this is as spot-on as it gets. It's the ole "addition by subtraction" next year. Of course we'll be worse, but there were just so many deficiencies on this team this year, that I can't help believe will be better next year without Trae. I'm hardly blaming him for all of them, but it's just very frustrating to see him so far removed from the team. I went to the home Texas game and the road Kansas game two days later and it was basically like it was everyone and Trae. He left the court right after the Texas game and didn't do the lap (while the entire rest of the team did), then, at The Phog, the entire team was out stretching and then shooting, and he comes out 15 minutes later by himself, Sure, in the grand scheme of things it might not be a big deal, but it would be cool if you're best player, leader, etc., was the one SETTING the example, and not just doing whatever he feels like.

The even sadder thing is he desperately needs another year in college, if for no other reason to become more mature and bulk up and build stamina, but he's probably priced himself out, and I don't say that b/c of the money he'd be getting. It's best to just move on IMO
