Transfer Portal 2027

Why is it worse than any other piss poor moment of the last 5 years?
I guess because they seem to be making this guy the focal point of the offseason and it sounds like they don’t plan to really look for any other top transfers. So if it falls through … wow.

I wonder if we’re holding a few ships for the potential 5 for 5 ruling. Seems like there will be a good pool of players available if that does get passed.

I haven’t followed it that closely, is the feeling that this will happen? We really need to add another guard, in case one of our top 4 gets injured.

Brown
Pop
Reid
Rooths
Mystery C

Forsythe
Hendricks
Mayfield
Rogers
Keefe

One more forward?

So it’s 11 total. Damn. That’s a bold move, Cotton.

who wants to be the first to predict this will be a tournament team?

We’re going in with 10 guys? Also, it seems like we spent less than last year?
I don't know if 10 is the right number, but we don't need a full 15 man roster of scholarship-level players. 10 or 11 is probably the sweet spot if you expect them all to be able to contribute. We'll only play 8-9 tops down the stretch.

I'm not panicking over 8-10 dudes. Not many teams are playing more than 8 guys. It would be nice, but Porter has never done that. You need 10 legit guys that can play/practice plus the 1-2 walk ons or low end scholarship guys that are there for practices and blowouts.

I'd rather have 8 really solid guys and pay them... risk it and don't pay guys 9-12.

Another example of a player some around here wanted to continue to talk up, that never did squat in college.
There is nothing wrong seeing potential positives in someone's game, even if they are never realized. It happens all the time in football as well. And this is coming from an inherent pessimist.

Brown - I expect about the same as last year, maybe a little improvement.
Pop - I think he is worse than Pack, but might not end up being by much. I worry about chemistry with him.
Reid - I don't think he has some super high season, but maybe a little improvement.
Rooths - WAY less proven than Davis was. Slightly less offensive game. Not as good at defending on the perimeter. Probably a better interior defender
C - We don't know yet, but I'm not going to pretend for one minute this is going to be some game changer.

Hendricks - BIG step up in competition. Metrics didn't love him last year, despite good shooting. I think this is likely to be an overall small step down from Jones.
Forsythe - I'm not a huge fan, but he'll be better than he was last year. Don't like that our best "guards" are all fairly small. I really like having a bigger, 6'3 to 6'5 guy. Maybe Hendricks plays that role some instead of the 3.
Mayfield - I don't have much faith in him doing much this year. We'll see. Raw talent.
Rogers - Unknown. Looked lost early. Couldn't even get on the floor. I'm not a huge fan of his mix of athleticism/skills, but IF he can build on the end of season play, he can be a solid backup.
Keefe - Don't let anybody convince you that he is going to do anything meaningful. He's not.

the 10 right now (if you believe the C thing ) includes a RS and true frosh and we have 0 idea if either can play at all .

so that leaves 8 which includes 2 Centers that won't really ever play together ..

so that leaves 6 guys for 4 spots ..

1 injury leaves them very very thin

How many did we have last year?
We started the year with the five starters, plus

Dayton
Jones
Jeff N
Kai
Blair

Holst (they likely knew he was redshirting)

Walkons/scrubs/practice players

Then immediately lost Blair and replaced him with Kirill.

So basically we had 10 guys who all actually played, plus a "scholarship" guy in Holst who they viewed as a real player, plus at least three other guys who could at least serve as live bodies in practice.

That is one way to look at it.

The other is being blind to a player's faults and physical limitations, only because they play for OU.

Go read last year's Portal thread, or maybe it was a preseason thread. Some around here are wrong about players every single season. Nwankwo is awesome. Holst will push for starter minutes. Rogers will overtake Wague at some point.

It's just nonsense.

I think hoping for the best is fine, as long as it is based in reality. Luke was pretty clearly never going to amount to anything other than a guy who might have three or four games a year where he made two or three 3s, but was otherwise a negative because of his defense and lack of athleticism.
