Truly objectionable statement by ESPN's Max Bretos

This times a million.

I'd never heard of Bretos before last night, and I certainly don't care what he says, generally. But when he's cluelessly downgrading my team on national television right after they've made the Final Four? That I care about, enough to send a few corrective tweets, anyway. It's not as though I'll be picketing ESPN headquarters or anything.

Just my opinion, but I think some of us are way too sensitive to what some talking-head on radio/tv/internet says about anything. Many of these THs (talking-heads) get paid to be controversial. They are actually happy when viewers react to what they are saying.

Personally, based on viewing experience, I have very low expectations that the THs will get things right. (Is that even their job?) For the most part, I don't care what the THs are saying. They are just putting out their opinions; not much different that you and I putting our opinions on this message board. Now the THs do get paid to talk and opine, but many are overpaid, but that is just my opinion.

In any event, the vast majority of the national sports media is shining a very positive bright light on the Sooners right now, as they should.

Agreed.

It matters because it discounts everything this program has accomplished. Do some homework if it's your job to report sports news. It's not hard. I don't expect it from outside fans. But do your job if you report national sports news...

This goes off topic but nobody reports news anywhere anymore. They report opinions. I can't watch foxnews, msnbc, cnn etc either.

Shock Jocks used to be on radio only. Now, mainstream media is full of them. They don't care if they are accurate. They just want responses.

You're being too kind here for you "know."

And on a side note, conformity is boring!

They litteaooy Just talked about OU fans tweeting this guy on ESPN radio. All the analysts jus blew it up. Haha Seth Greenberg is about to come on and they said they will talk to him more about it. Crazy that y'all made a big enough ruckus about it for them to warrant having a whole segment about it! Lol good job.

I think "pedigree" is the defining word. I think that's considered "blue bloods" which we aren't in bball. But if we win s natty I think we are sitting right outside of that.

Max Bretos just didn't do his homework. I'm sure he now knows that OU has won more NCAA Tournament basketball games (41) than any college who has not won a National Championship. Plus, three Final Four appearances since the start of a 64 team tournament should get on any professional journalist's radar.

That's just it, Max Bretos is not a professional journalist. He doesn't even have a journalism degree. He graduated from Florida State with a degree in "international relations," whatever that means.

He's a former radio jock who was a soccer commentator, which may explain why he is obviously clueless when it comes to college basketball. I had no idea who he was, so I did an online search and found this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Bretos

Bretos seems to make a habit of sticking his foot in his mouth. He was suspended for 30 days in 2012 when he used the term "chink in the armor" in reference to than New York Knicks point guard, Jeremy Lin, an Asian, while on the air as an ESPNews anchor.

Here's his ridiculous response:

I judge with an iron fist on this one.. Got to win at least 1 National Title.

Using his logic in his response to Skyvue, maybe he needs to do a little self-examination before he sets the bar that high. I did a search on him to see if he had received any journalism awards. Clearly there aren't any, mainly because he's not a professional anything, and he's certainly not knowledgeable about basketball.

I don't like what he said either. One would think that a sports commentator, even one like him who is not a professional, would do enough research to be familiar with his subject matter. But it may be best to let him return to his place in obscurity, where he is clearly more qualified to make observations about basketball that aren't even close to being accurate.
