Tyler Neal anyone?

The upgrade in the level of competition the conference season brought has stymied Tyler and I am not certain he can play his way out of it as his minutes decrease. No question his confidence is waining.

Tyler just doesn't look like a division 1 player.

To me, the only player that see's the court that 100 percent doesn't look like a D-1 player is Arent (sp???). He looks lost out there, not Neal IMO. If you recorded the game, rewatch the parts where he is in there. He is EXTREMELY lost on the offensive side, not so much on the defensive side but still lost. I sure hope I am not the only one that feels this way.

Neal just needs to find his groove again. He has a few drives the basket where he lost control of the ball (previous games). He is still young.

That is a silly statement. Tyler is very good and would be a star on many if not most D-1 teams. There are over 300 D-1 teams. You are basing your opinion on the top 30% of D-1 teams rather than the entire universe of D-1 teams.

Stacy King did very little at OU his first two seasons. Stacy King averaged 6 points a game his freshman season and 7 a game his sophomore season. This was during a time period when OU was averaging about 90 points a game compared to 75 now.

I am not saying Neal will explode like King did but have some faith in the kid. He is working hard and contributing.

Very bad comparison.

I'm sorry but right now Neal would not be a star on many or most D1 schools right now. Only team in the big 12 he could start for is Texas Tech and thats nothing to brag about b/c he didn't look good against them.

As for Stacy King..lets not say his name and Tyler Neal's name in the same sentence.

The worst thing about Tyler is that right now he is caught between being a 3 and a 4...and in college basketball thats more of a bad thing than a good thing. He can't take people off the dribble "right now" where in conference play, you really need that ability from your wings. But tyler is better suited for guarding the 3 than he is guarding post players. He's not good at posting up. He needs to add to his offense...right now it consists mostly of shooting 3's.

This offseason he needs to work on his ability to get to the rim and create separation from his defender.

The game has speeded up with conference play underway, but his reaction time is stuck at a different level.

I like Tyler Neal, but with what we have coming in next season I'd like to see the kid get an opportunity to redshirt. Is he even 19 yet? If so its barely.

Stacy King was used simply to point out that players improve. Nobody saw Stacy King going for a limited use role player to an All American but it happened. I am not saying Tyler Neal will do that but he is working hard and contributing. Billy Tubbs has publicly stated that he thought both Dave Seiger and Terry Evans might have been recruiting mistakes and they both turned out to be really good players. OU fans should not insult OU players that are working hard and contributing. Tyler Neal is also making good grades. He is a great example of a Division 1 basketball player.

Starting in the Big XII or at any BCS school is much different than being a starter in D-1. There are more than 300 D-1 schools (I think it is 346 but I am not sure about that). The BCS conferences (Big 10, Big XII, SEC, ACC, Big East and Pac 12) account for 74 of those teams. That is less than 25% of all D-1 teams. Many to most means to me somewhere between say 15% (or about 50 teams or many teams) and 51% (about 174 teams). If the kid was in the Southland Conference, Atlantic Sun, American East or some other minor conference he would likely start and/or be a star player.

Tyler Neal was the Gatorade Player of the year in Oklahoma and the Coaches Association Player of the year in Oklahoma as a senior. The guy is most defintiely a D-1 player.

Were some of his critics to actually play a game of basketball with him they would quickly learn how good he is. Every scholarship player on OU's basketball team is an elite basketball player. That is why they are scholarship basketball players in the Big XII. The fact that they might not be elite Big XII, college or NBA players does not remotely mean they are not legitimate d-1 players.

Wow! I should have known most of you experts would say that he is no good. Crap, he is about as physically talented as any we have. I thought he may have been sick or something. He may have not been practicing well or other things in which his time has decreased but to say it is because of talent is foolish.

At the start of this season, was he not one of the first off the bench? He struggles with his shot at times, because of the cock and shoot form, but he is a very good rebounder. Please refrain from giving your assessment of players abilities.

haha, gotcha. Over 300 DI teams in America and he couldn't play for any of them. Clown statement.

He'd probably start or play substantial minutes at TU and ORU IMHO. That said, we look to be bunched up at his position next season, I'll reiterate my hope that he gets an opportunity to redshirt and mature, I think the kid could be a quality player by his RS senior season.

What good would that do? Tyler's biggest problem is that he doesn't have a position. He is too slow, and not skilled enough to play the 3 effectively. And he isn't really big/strong enough to play the 4. In a perfect world, he'd be a zone buster off the bench at either the 3/4 position, for every limited minutes. A guy you bring in to knock down open shots. Problem is, even moreso than Pledger, Neal has a hard time getting open looks for himself. And with Grooms and Cam struggling, and nearly all of Neal's minutes coming at the 3 against quicker guys, he is struggling to get anything resembling an open look most games.

I dunno, but an entire year to work on primarily the things you listed might be helpful, particularly given that he is the same age as many incoming freshmen. Plus he is the kind of kid I like having in the program setting an example for other players off the court. I guess I just don't see him as a "finished product" but instead see a 19 year old with plenty of upside that could help this program in the long run. Tyler Neal as a 22 year old graduated Senior has an opportunity to be much better than as a 19 year old Sophomore. JMHO.

He's helping this program now. And thats what we need. Theirs nothing a redshirt would do to help this kid out. He's getting quality minutes and thats where he will get better. And when we lose our 6 seniors next year...He will have the opportunity to be the guy along with Clark.
