Tyler Neal

And what give up on Cade? A guy that has given 110% his entire time at OU! A guy who is the teams 2nd leading scorer. A guy who is the best defender on the team.

Take it easy. You're putting in words that I never once posted. I never once said give up on Cade.

Of course he needs to be in there; his leadership and more importantly his effort/contribution on defense help mitigate OU's struggles.

Giving up on this season sets a terrible example. You always play to win no matter how bad you are. If Capel does give up on this season the I'll jump of the bandwagon and say he doesn't need to be here. There is a diference between giving up on th season and getting young guys more PT.

There is a difference between giving up on the season, and building towards the future. When I say "the season is lost", I mean that Capel needs to start setting towards the future, which primarily means to focus more on getting younger players more touches (i.e. getting Pledger/Fitz/particularly Clark more early looks), and increasing the minutes for guys that can develop into very good role players (Neal). That doesn't mean completely give up on someone like Cade, and I wouldn't want that. But Neal does need to see more minutes, and it doesn't nor shouldn't have to be solely Cade's mintues that are being compromised.

You can still do right by Cade and also make the transition to focusing on the guys who will be the core of the future. Oklahoma basketball is bigger than one person. No one outside of Pauly D is suggesting Cade just be benched from here on out.

Programs simultaneously compete and plan for the future all the time. Ask any coach who has ever redshirted a player.

This.

Glad we're on the same page.

All he needs is playing time to improve his defense and adjust to the speed of a more physical college game.

Kind of a pet peeve of mine. An extra 5-10 minutes/game isn't going to be the difference between his developmental success/failure. Most improvement comes during practice, not games IMO. There's certainly something to be said for adjusting to the speed of the game or the pressure of playing in front of Big 12 crowds, but most of what players like him need will come with time and practice.

Why does Neal have to take Cade's minutes? He needs to take some of Pledgers minutes also. He has a quicker hook with Newell and Neal than any other player. I think if he would give them some quality minutes without fear of the quick hook they would play better.

Agreed that 5-10 extra minutes won't be the sole reason for the way his future plays out. Practice is important as well.

However, I disagree that practice is where most improvement is made. Adjusting to the speed of the game and the comfortability in it is where most improvement is made IMO. Practice is important, but nothing prepares most young players better than when they are inured with the actual games.

Sorry Stoops I miss understood what u were saying. I completely agree with what you're saying. And that's pretty much what I think is happening for the most part. The problem is sometimes Cade gets into his "I need to shoot" modes and takes away others looks. Aside from cade everyone else is a foundation for the future. If I'm understanding correctly I think you just saying when guys like Cade or Pledg are not playing well to get someone like Neal extra minutes.

yup, and at least this year, think about who he is practicing against. it does not replicate a big 12 lineup. practice simply will not get him used to what he's going to face in conference, this year or next. i'm with ada. he has a great feel for the game. more minutes is only going to expand what he can bring to the team. which means he'll play about 2 minutes tuesday night.

oh, and nice use of "inure." didn't think grizzlies fans had that in them.

No worries, I appreciate the apology though. Seems like we're on the same page now.

Exactly.

Better watch out for the Grizz, they just got done humiliating the Mavs last night. Winners of 5 of their last 7 (includes them, the Thunder, the Lakers, and Jazz) is about as good as its probably ever going to get for me as a Grizzlies fan. I'm just going to soak this time in right now.... :chestram2: :woot

I agree that Neal should be getting more minutes. But, you guys are assuming that Capel actually has a set substitution pattern. By my estimation, he does not. He just puts people in at random. So, its not like Neal can take minutes away from someone. Coach just needs to think about putting him in more.

Also, on the nickname front. The Great White Hope is ok for T. Neal. But, I heard some guys behind me call him Zuckerberg. I loved it and have been calling him that ever since.
