Who will be the starters?

I think it's pretty safe to say that the big 3 seniors will start and then whoever else shows potential. This is who I figure will start, but by the beginning of conference play it very well may change.

Guard - M. Manning
Guard - A. Llanusa
Center - Vivi PL
Guard - G. Ortiz
Guard - M. Rich (I really think/hope she's going to surprise some people)

Others who very may will come in immediately
- L. Williams
- S. Pellington
- M. Simpson
- EJ (my personal favorite upperclassman, who I believe has the most potential)

VPL
Ortiz
Manning
Llanusa
Williams

OU will be small but fast, putting the ball in the basket will be the hard part... even if Llanusa comes in ready to play, she's still going to need help scoring from at least 2 others consistently.

VPL
Ortiz
Manning
Llanusa
Williams

I agree this is the likely starting lineup for the first game. Just a guess but look for Pellington to start by conference play...she appears to have the athleticism it takes in the today's game. Regardless we really need Pellington and Simpson to be able to contribute significant minutes as freshman.

I agree on EJ. She will probably spell VPL.

She will be required to* spell VPL.

VPL can be truly dominant, but she only averaged 22 minutes last year - due to conditioning and foul trouble. To be competitive, we're going to need her to up her minutes to at LEAST 30/game. And she simply cannot have those games where she picks up 2 fouls in the first few minutes of the game.

EJ certainly has a lot of potential, but she only appeared in 26 of our 33 games, averaging under 6 minutes/game. I think a realistically hopeful expectation for her next season is to play 10 valuable minutes/game.

Honestly, we may have to use Maddie at the 5 sparingly. Who else? Sherri has given high praise to Simpson's rebounding abilities, but she's a) a freshman and b) only 6 feet tall (the same height as Ana and two inches shorter than Maddie). Expecting Simpson to guard/score on the Kelani Browns of the world is unrealistic. We could really be hurting at the post if ViVi plays herself out of the game.

Locks to start:
VPL
Maddie
Gabbi

Right now, I'd predict that Williams and Ana will be the two other starters for the first game. I'd prefer if we could use Williams' speed/energy as a spark plug off the bench, but I'm not sure there's anyone else available to start right away.

I agree with the previous post about Williams the more I think about it. She's got the most experience coming into the season and she has great speed and her defense is also good. I just hope one of these underclassmen besides Anna becomes a reliable scoring option. Ortiz and Manning can be unpredictable at times and we will need someone reliable. I'm just very interested in how Morgan Rich will play the season, I've seen her high school YouTube videos and she looks stellar! I know this is high school and college ball is a completely different world but they have even said that she is one of if not the best shooters on the team, I don't understand why she did not get more playing time or at least an opportunity to showcase her skills last year, maybe because all of the seniors?

I think Llanusa will be the best guard we have had since Whitney, perhaps the best since Stacy. Maddie should have been, but her injuries limited her. I would love to see a breakout year for Maddie. But, let's look at the history that we have had.

We really haven't had the scoring guard that could take over a game. Whitney might have been it had she not been injured. Ellenberg had some streaks. DRob came in as a distributor, not a shooter. Maddie did come in as someone who could score, but was injured. But, we have lacked the player who shot 40% from three, 42 or 43% from two. In her best year, Peyton, who was supposed to be this great scoring guard, shot 41.04% (39.34% career), 34.36% from three(33.06% career), and 78.57% from the free throw line (75.89% career). Those are good numbers, but not those of a prolific scorer. She scored 12.64 ppg as a sophomore, 11.99 career.

Some criticized Maddie's shooting. But, last year, after two ACLs, she shot 42.43% from the field, 39.67% from three, and 80.0% from the free throw line, all better than that of Peyton in her best year. She also averaged 12.60 ppg, almost what Peyton averaged in her best year. She seemed to be improving as the year went along. With a healthy year, she could be more of the guard that we have needed.

I think Ana comes in with that scorer's capability and mentality. She can shoot from anywhere, but she can also create her shot. I think she and Maddie will be effective together in that role, both shooting better than the guards of last year.

I get the general impression that Shaina can shoot the three. But, what impressed me in the games that I watched was her ability to complete the play. She doesn't seem to throw up layups, only to miss half of them. She seems to get to the rim and score. She has a speed advantage, and it seems like she plays a lot taller than what she is. Speed can do that---McCarty, e.g. I think her speed will find a place very early in the lineup.

I just don't think Williams ever learned to shoot at the level of a D-1 guard, somewhat like Tiny. She also fails to realize when she is overmatched and throws up shots when guarded.

With Maddie and Ana, it is a bit more difficult to guard because they are about 6-2 and 6-1. They can shoot over some guards, something that Carter and Little could not do. Both are tall enough to score on a layup in a fairly crowded lane. Both are tall enough to hit a pull up ten to fifteen footer. They also handle the ball a lot better than Peyton and Gioya.

I just don't think anyone can keep Shaina on the bench, unless Rich is better than what we saw.

I completely agree with the assessment on Ana, based off what i've seen in her youtube videos she's going to be exciting to watch. I thought it would be very interesting to see her and Dungee play together and how good those two would be together by Dungee's senior year but I guess it was not meant to be. I hope Pellington is as good as advertised but I have my doubts, since she's not even ranked in the top 100...this may be a long season unfortunately.

Shaina is not ranked in the top 100 because she is Canadian. If you look at their international rankings, I think she is #4.

I've looked at HoopGurlz rankings for each recruiting class the last several years and foreign players are on this list on occasion. In fact this incoming class has a few. I guess I just figured Pellington wasn't a top 100 player and didn't make the cut. If she indeed is #4 on the international ranking that makes me believe she'd be very good, somewhere around the same skill set as D-Rob was, which we need. No offense to Ortiz, but I just don't think she's a great pointguard. She's a good guard, but i thought tiny was a better point than her, so hopefully Pellington takes over point and Ortiz can move to shooting guard?

Hopefully your expectations for Ana are spot on. My take on all freshmen is I hope they can improve the team but I will wait until I have personally seen them play 20 games in an OU uniform before I label them anything but a promising freshman.

Labeling Ana the best since Whitney is not saying much when Maddie, Peyton, Kornet, Carter and Ortiz are the only other guards to compare against. Labeling her potentially the best since Stacey might be a big stretch.

The question in your assessment of Ana for this year is she ready, willing and capable of being the go to player as a freshman with Maddie, Ortiz and Vivi on the team. For certain none of the three upperclassman have shown that they can consistently be the go to gal when the game is on the line. They have all done it but none have the mentality of give me the damn ball where I can go win this game.

It Ana cannot take that role I have doubts that we will see anything from the Sooners other than what we have seen in the recent past, an upper middle Big 12 class team capable of making the NCAA as about a #6-#7 seed.

I would like to see this team finish within a game of 2nd place in the conference and get a #4-5 seed. If they do so I think they will have overachieved a bunch and it will have been Sherri's best coaching job in several years.

Great post! I agree on everything you said... I'd add that I think Simpson could be a bit of a surprise and really help the team...

I completely agree with the previous post. Ortiz does not have the quickness. I like her and do not want to hate on her, I just think she'd be a better shooting guard option. Penzo is probably our best passer but the girls aren't always able to catch her passes because they aren't used to that caliber of passing, in my opinion anyway. I'd really like to see Pellington come in and be a D-Rob type of point guard and have our three seniors show a bit more consistency and be more reliable down the stretch. They can show moments of brilliance, but I believe the thing keeping us at a mediocre level team is the inconsistency (I seriously wanted to throw my tv across the room watching the loss to Oral Roberts!!!).

The truth is at the high school level the best player is usually the pg - but when you play for an elite organization or say a national team PGs are players that run team lead team and make team better. It is interesting that just becuase she plays pg in high school we assume she can handle it at the college level. I believe she will be a 2 guard this year. Her own Country doesn't place her as pg - this says something! https://t.co/ULTAmJ2ikF?amp=1
