Victor to portal

I mean, I was holding off on getting antsy about a new coach. But, at the rate OU is losing players, we better hope that there are about at least 6 OU level transfers out there that the new coach has the ability to sign, or..... OUCH. Talk about gutted. Does that leave Issanza as the only big on the roster, as of now? YIKES

This hurts. I was excited to see what Vic would become.

If he can't provide quality minutes on a team as paper thin inside as this one......well....not much else to say.

Bring me some basketball players!

A lengthy coach search is devastating in the age of the transfer portal.

I’m a Lon fan but he did a poor job with Vic IMO. Vic is going to be really good before he is done. This is a huge loss.

Agreed. I don't care what they look like getting off the bus, I want some guys that know the game and have been playing since they were 5.

Can someone say April Fools and make this end please? Sad times for :OUbball-logo:

Vic was given every chance. He cant finish around the rim. But blame lon.

OU is going to be awful next year. We have to hire a guy that is in it for the long haul and access to deep pockets. That man is Eddie Najera. He needs to be named head coach today to save what little roster we have. He's the kind of guy that could help Victor a ton.

I don't think this is an especially long search for a vacancy that comes up at this time of year - 2 weeks before the Final Four.

If my son was in the position of Victor I would advise him to sit tight until the new coach was named. But if he's determined to leave, no matter who the new coach is, there isn't much you can do about that.

CoachTalk....any word on coaching search that you have heard besides the obvious stuff that is out there?

I honestly think, outside of his age, Beilein would be a pretty solid choice but I still think Kellen Sampson would be a great hire. I'm not as big a Jerome Tang fan as some but he wouldn't be horrible either.

How soon do you think this gets done? I know the Final Four is typically a BIG spot for coaching movement, interviews and rubbing elbows.

I wonder if guys transferring have an effect on the coaches being pursued? If there's dead weight already on the roster then they can take care of that when they get there. But if they see practically nothing there to work with I wonder if that can have an effect on their desire to take over a job..

I think we'll able to replace two points, two fouls and 50% FT shooting rather easily. Hell, that can be corralled at the Huff by lunch time.

Basketball players. Bring them in by the busload!

I'm 100% in agreement on this. Vic didn't develop key skills for his position in two years. Defensively, he should have been a game changer, but he wasn't, and his offense never got to the point where he deserved to play over the other guys.

If Jalen Hill transfers, though, I'm probably going to take a few days off the board. He is what college basketball is all about and will be a great player for us the next two years.

as of right now Manek and Issanza

Agree 100%. Post offense and defense weren't very good with Vic on the floor. Fact is, after Kuath it was a huge drop-off defensively to Manek and then an even larger drop-off to Victor.

Well wishes to Vic I hope he has success wherever he lands.

He's crazy athletic but it's hard for me to feel too broken up about losing a guy going into his 3rd year that hasn't shown virtually any kind of offensive game. I could understand if he was at least a lock down defender that we're putting on other teams best players, but he was unplayable most games the 2nd half of the season. For a guy going into his 3rd year that ain't cuttin' it.

I’m with 04 on this— this is nothing that matters. He was a non-contributor with limited upside. Could he get better? Sure, but it will likely take a LOT of work for him to even max out as an average player. He’s a borderline P5 player and my guess is he lands somewhere lower on the scale where he will get more of a chance to play.

If Manek and Williams return and Harkless and Gibson stay then the new coach will have a decent base to work with entering the year and can hopefully fill some gaps with transfers. If Manek and Williams bolt then this looks like a complete rebuild type of year/situation for the new coach. This isn’t terribly uncommon when you have a coaching change. Year 1 of Capel and Lon were both rough— we are likely headed for that again.

Maybe he'll turn out to be really good, but this doesn't feel like much of a loss to me other than losing a body.

Some guys just don't seem to have the basketball IQ that is needed. Maybe he'll develop it, but that's not typical. The game hadn't slowed down for him at all. You could see he would panic anytime he had the ball. Just seemed out of control. I got nervous when he had the ball, especially on the perimeter.

Again, maybe he'll prove me wrong, but right now? I'm not bothered by it.
