If last year's team with three (count them, 3) McDonald's All-Americans and a lot more experience only managed to win 13 games, 12 or more victories for this year's team should be viewed as a reason to celebrate.
There are nine (that's 9 out of 12 scholarship players) freshmen and sophomores on our roster this year, plus two JUCO transfers who had never played a minute at the D-1 level. I'm not counting Osby, who is not even eligible, and the walk-on, Honore'. My point is, this is a young and inexperienced group of players who shouldn't be expected to exceed what last year's team should have accomplished but failed to do.
I went into this season with a desire to see changes in what I saw as one of the worst and most frustrating years in my memory as a Sooner basketball fan. So far, my expectations have been fulfilled. Would I like to see them shoot better and win the easier games on our schedule without the drama? Sure, who wouldn't. But if I continue to see improvements in the fundamentals that make basketball fun for me, I'll be happy.
I don't care if this team wins 10 games, 12 or 22, as long as they hustle, play with passion, work hard on defense, minimize their mistakes and restore the family atmosphere OU's program was known for. If you're a fan who wants to make yourself miserable with unreasonable expectations for a team that may not be able to deliver, knock yourself out! As for me, I plan to enjoy the ride and accept whatever the end of this season brings, good or bad.
