Everything clicked for the Jaguars in their 72-54 championship victory over Springdale (Ark.) Saturday in the Durant Lions Classic.

Sophomore guard Jessi Murcer rebounded from her 10-point performance, with a season high 26. Senior guard Ashley Gomez added 21, and Westmoore’s hot shooting made it impossible for Springdale to keep up.

Westmoore coach Andrea Guziec felt it was a big step for her group.

“This team that we played tonight is as good as a lot of teams we’ll see later in playoffs if not at the state tournament,” Guziec said. “They’re a quality team and their size is amazing. I would say their starting lineup, they only had one girl under (5foot-10), and then as tall as 6-1. Across the board they were bangers and I was just really proud of our girls for being physical back with them.”

With Springdale limiting Westmoore forward Kaci Richardson inside, the Jags turned to their perimeter shooters to put points up early. Murcer, Gomez and Sydney Chastain produced and helped come up big win. Murcer was awarded the tournament’s most valuable player for her performance.

“(Murcer) came out on fire,” Guziec said. “She really got us going, and settled in. Then at the end, she helped take care of the basketball for us and was able to knock down some shots.”

The Jaguars didn’t slow down on the defensive end. Gomez felt the added energy on that end has led to the undefeated start.

“We kept preaching defense, defense, defense, at the beginning of the season,” Gomez said. “(These last two games), we really had to play great defense, block out, rebound, because those teams crash the boards hard. They know how to break down defenses, and if we just played good solid defense, we were going to win.”
