I read it as, L4B doesn't get why people hate Duke because they win.

Next guy says, then you don't understand why people hate the Yankees. i.e. because they win. And L4B says that's why he's a Yankees fan (because they win.) That's what I got out of it. If he's a Yankees fan because people hate the Yankees. Then yeah, pretty goofy reason.

I can see that translation, I read it differently.

To be honest, liking a team because they win is weak in itself, without some other reason.
