I don't get why Capel hasn't recruited well in-state? Besides Blake for some reason he can't get the top players from Oklahoma to come to OU. He hasn't offered Josh Richardson, No offer to Ryan Spangler. He is missing out on some talented young players.

Wasn't Tyler Neal the top player in the state last year?
Wasn't Cade the number 2 player in the state the year we got Blake?

Phil Jackson couldn't have gotten Xavier Henry to come to OU.

Yes.
Yes.
True.

I understand that alot of these guys are border line recruits but we wiffed on
Amric Fields (I think he would of helped this team)
Daniel Orton (Idk why we couldnt get a better look from him),
Rotnie Clark (I know there was beef with willie but still yet),
Spangler (We never had interest, not sure what kind of player he is but I would think potential is there once he concentrates on bball only)
Richardson (Talent is definately there, hope we take a look).
James Watson (Hind site good thing we didnt IMO)

No Tyler wasnt better than Americ to me, Fields has way more potential 6'9 can handle the ball, athletic, can shoot. Fields was the kid we shouldve got.
As for Cade in my opinion he wasnt Xavier Alexander or Eddie Williams from Lawton was. I dont just mean High School players i mean JUCO kids too. He couldve got Chris Cooks from Idabel in 07. Tyrus Mcgee this year or even Robert Crawford from Connors.

Crawford and Cooks wouldn't do well at OU. I've seen a lot of Crawford and though he is athletic as all get out, he's still limited. On McGee, we'll see. OU needs a frosh pg as opposed to another junior to stack next to Carl Blair. I heard that OU was interested in Alexander, but there is a history with the Alexanders and OU with Deangelo a former player who had a bad experience at OU and I believe his brother walked on at OU as well.

I think it is a given though that most of us feel OU should target more instate guys. Jeff if your reading this board, go after Richardson. Go after Raney. Go After Christiansen, because he's a guy who can help. You've went after some real bums from out of state. I won't name names, but we all know who they are. You've only had one Oklahoma bust and that's Hardrick. From Godbold to Neal, the Oklahoma kids have produced.

Why wouldnt Crawford work out for OU? He has improved tremendously since Victory Christian he leads Connors in scoring. He has improved his jumpshot and handle. If OU doesnt get this kid somebody needs to. What was wrong with Cooks kid was a beast in HS and at Redlands soild player at Missouri State as well. Mcgee is the foreal to me,but u never know with juco kids.

He basically does the same thing that the guy who led connors in scoring last year does for OU. The pg at Connors is the player on that team. Codero Maclin is also a better prospect than Crawford. As for Cooks, he was good. However look how long it took for him to be productive at MSU. And also at that time, OU's roster was a lot better.

Well ah, yes, but, er ah ....... :ez-laugh:

Your reply makes entirely too much sense for this board, JBaker.

It seems like we have this discussion EVERY year in ALL sports. When it's all said and done, OU misses on very few players in state that become REAL impact players on the D1 scene. Of the ones they do miss on, most have no interest in OU and many times, no interest of staying in state - which has little to do with Capel recruiting in-state players.

So, your saying you would rather Capel recruit a Ray Willis, Tony Neysmith, Kyle Cannon, Chris Early or Orlando Allen than take a chance on a kid from Oklahoma?

No, not at all. The only point I was making is, I don't care where they come from if they can play.

At this point we need to be concerned about if they stick around and graduate and can play.

As another poster above stated, this team would be better had Capel recruited a few Oklahoma kids instead of taking chances on all the malcontents from the east coast.

NOTE: I'm not saying he should have only recruited Oklahoma kids, but kids from surrounding states that have a tie to the area. Had he recruited 1 or 2 Okie's that have Neal type talent and this team is deeper off the bench and in a better situation.

Like who?

Honestly, I don't follow recruiting and I don't live in Oklahoma, so I don't have any names but I have seen names tossed about on this board of kids who were not recruited by Oklahoma who went to smaller colleges and made an impact.

Looking at Missouri State's roster, they have 2 kids who are 6'10" or 6'11", both from Oklahoma. One started all but 2 or 3 games last year and averaged about 10 ppg and 6-8 rpg. The other played a lot last season as well and had decent averages. I would bet both are more skilled than Nick Thompson and Orlando Allen.

David Godbold was headed to Wichita State because Oklahoma was hot on Malik Hairston. Once Hairston announced he was signing with Oregon, we then offered Godbold, who became a full time starter his last 2 years and a part-time starter his first 2 years.

I know the state of Oklahoma has produced at least 1 player of this caliber every year who was not recruited by OU so they went to a smaller school. If we were passing on the Oklahoma kids and getting better players who were sticking around and preparing to graduate as well as contributing on the team, then I wouldn't say one word. However, we have not. Instead, Capel targets the east coast malcontents who either get booted from the team or transfer out because they just aren't very good.

C'mon dude. Really?

Again, you're comparing small schools in small conferences to OU and the Big XII. I'm betting OU, even with this team, would fare pretty well in some of these conferences.

Why bring Goldbold up? He went to OU.

There's no guarantee ANY of the players you are, although vaguely, referencing would've had ANY impact at OU in the Big XII and then once they didn't, ala Ray Willis, Orlando Allen, etc, that they too wouldn't have transferred. (sheesh that last sentence really ran together, but you get the point)

Again, my point is NOT that Capel should ignore Oklahoma recruits, but that he shouldn't just recruit them because they grew up in Oklahoma and NOW have success at UCO and the likes...

Kelvin didn't really recruit that much in state either. Renzi Stone, Ebi Ere, Taylor Griffin, Kevin Bookout, David Godbold, DeAngelo Alexander(transferred), Ryan Humphrey(transferred) were about it over 12 years.

I would like to see us try and at least take a look at the top player in the state most years, but maybe not every year. Some years we just won't get a JR Giddons, Xavier Henry or Sheldon Williams. We got lucky to have Blake's brother on our team a couple years back. I would love to see us always get the top level player but it just won't happen every year.

As far as Fields at TCU. He's probably not the post player we though. He's getting big minutes and scoring around 7 a game and with 2.8 rebounds a game. In limited minutes for Neal he has 2.2 rebound and 3.5 points. I think Neal has better promise than Fields just looking at the numbers so far.
