Why was Cade in the game?

He brought Cade back in and he bricked a couple of 3's and gave up about 10 points in layups trying not to foul out... He literally did not do one positive thing after returning with those 4 fouls.

If you aren't going to play, you might as well be over on the bench. You would be better off just playing and fouling out.

I just don't like the idea of coming in and giving up points just to be on the floor. At least try to stop them.

Cade is the real meaning of hot or cold. He got us going with Fitz today. If only Clark would have showed up.

I'm with abd here. I have no problem with the shots Cade was taking at the end, but he was a sieve on the defensive end because he had to be. It was definitely a catch-22 for Capel.

Its too bad osu didn't have a Tyler Hatch or the dude who lost his tooth or the baseball player that played in the 90 season (all 3 were offensive liabilities but played considerable minutes) so we could put Cade on him.

I think he did it because he can't see into the future like you can.

Had Capel left him on the bench there would be a thread (started by ABD) wondering (complaining) about why Cade wasn't back in the game.

We were down late and needed points... I'll agree as far as to say that Cade coulda played a little better D, even with 4 fouls.

Right, and had his 3's dropped, we might have won. But Capel can't see into the future to know that he wasn't going to hit those. Evidently, ABD can.

Abd has been giving props to Capel and the group all week, so lay off.

Was anyone really pleased with Cade just stepping out of the way on defense? No. That's all Abd is saying. If he's going to be in the game, we can't have him being that big of a detriment to us on D. Davis killed us on about 3 straight possessions late in the second half. That's the focus here. Why is he in if he is going to cost us points?

Nobody else was really trying to do anything on offense outside of Pledger and Fitz and Pledger just couldn't make anything, and Fitz couldn't get the ball.

Because there was no way to know that he wasn't going to score. You have to count on your only real leader to get you through the end of a battle. Only with the benefit of hindsight can you say it was the wrong thing to do. Capel doesn't get that benefit.

Ididn't say anything about whether or not Cade would score. We're losing at this point. We can't afford to give up easy baskets. So again, if he's giving up easy points, why is he on the floor?

Edit: My solution. Tell him to play D or sit. I figure he would choose to play D.

If you're behind you're going to need stops. If we'd been a little ahead I could see that logic.

I've got a crazy idea. How about the other guys on the floor realizing the situation and helping a little more? It was obvious to everyone that no matter which guy it was that Cade was guarding, they were going to shoot it.

this is a dumb thread

Agreed. Cade is the only senior on the team and for a time at the end of the first half, the only player who could bring the ball up the floor without turning it over. This is a young team who is still learning to win, let alone learning to win on the road in a hostile rivarly game environment. Everyone else was standing around waiting for Fitzgerald to take a shot, someone had to take the ball and try to make something happen.

Having 4 defenders guarding 5 is not a better solution. Cade could just play D. If he fouls out, he fouls out.

Newell played well in the first half. All of the bench guys did a nice job in the first half. Why not trust them and play D? I know Cade can help on offense, but if we can't get stops, we can't come back. It's as simple as that.

I see you're jumping to Capel and Cade's defense, and I'm not putting the loss on Capel or Cade. I see a strategy that was lacking and osu took advantage of it during crunch time. Message boards are here to discuss these sorts of things, IMHO. It doesn't always have to be about someone's "agenda."

Other than Page's lone 3, Cade was the only player on court who made a 3. Giving up a some 2's makes sense when you have to count on the only long ball guy in the game to get you back in it. It would have been foolish to pull the only guy who had hit from beyond the arc when you need those points. Add to that, he is your only real leader.

Aaron is right, Cade needed help on defense, but you can't pull him, and I know that if he had sat for the remainder of the game, people on here would have been screaming, "get Cade in there". In fact, I think I read that on the game thread.
For the life of me, I can't understand why people can't understand that they have the benefit of hindsight when they make observations.
I know Cade and I'd bet money he wishes he'd have played a bit more aggressively on D during that last stretch. Then again, he had those fouls because the refs were calling fouls if you exhaled too strongly. He had to choose how to walk that line, fans just get to pontificate about what he and Capel did wrong, after the fact.
Addendum: On Cade's 4th foul, he was standing with his back to the Poke and got called for a foul. Literally, just standing there. You can't get less aggressive than that and yet he got called for a foul. Gee, I wonder why he was being a bit tentative.

I'm just saying that a situation like this happens quite often. Other guys have to realize how aggressive the offense becomes and step in and take a charge. Brown and Olukemi were just ducking their heads and going to the basket. Twice it would have been very easy for anyone to step in and take one.
