I live in KS and one of my favorite topics to get the JHawk fans fired up is the one and only Billy Tubbs. Cutting the net down at Allen Fieldhouse and telling the fans that "No matter how poor the officiating is, don't throw anything on the floor"! Two of my favorite memories of Billy. Hope the Sooners play well tonight at Lawrence! Boomer

Cause if you can beat KU in Lawrence, it is just a shade easier than winning the national title! I'm sure the refs will take care of the Big 12's bball darlings. You can't find a KU football fan with a search warrant in the fall. (Or basketball fan either when they lose). All I'm seeing today in Kansas is "#10"!

Cutting down the nets is usually reserved for winning some sort of championship, but I like the enthusiasm.

In the 80s OU clinched the Big 8 in Lawrence and Tubbs cut the nets down. Obviously that would not apply here because OU cannot clinch the regular season in Lawrence. Additionally, I am not sure most coaches would have the onions to cut down the nets on the road like Tubbs did.

Just as there is only one Oklahoma, there is only one Billy Tubbs. So glad he was ours back then.

Which was retribution for Ted Owens cutting down the nets in Norman in '83 after defeating the Sooners in the first round of the Big 8 Tournament (first round was played at home sites back then, sports fans.)

Chickenhawks seem to always forget that little nugget.

Yes they do!

A few years back, Max Falkenstein went on one of the KC sports talk shows. He was the color commentator for KU athletics for 60 years or somesuch. Anyway, they asked him about Tubbs cutting down the nets in AF, and of course he said how classless was Tubbs for that. One of the announcers asked him about KU cutting them down the previous year in Norman in Owens last win and Falkenstein denied it happened. I about wrecked my car. Typical KU idiots.

Kruger won't cut them down tonight but someday, we need to do that again in honor of the great Billy Tubbs!!!

Right, they clinched a title/championship, making it appropriate.

Forget cutting them down. Beat KU at Phog and you get to blowtorch the net till it's engulfed in flames.

I'm only disappointed that the Beakers didn't get pelted with something when they cut down the nets in '83. I wasn't living in Oklahoma then, but I was furious when I heard about it.

It's even more disgusting to know that the voice of the Squawks basically lied through his teeth about it. But the Beaker-Homer media in Kansas and in KC basically lied about the whole night that was "controversial" in '84 at the Phog, from what I've heard. From claiming someone from OU flipped off the crowd (heard they said it was done by Choo Kennedy, who was waving Mike Anderson's 1979 Big 8 champs ring at them) to denying that their crowd was pretty vicious, it's a big reason why I've hated them on a par with UT and OSU.

I guess I'm still a little confused. Even with a win, it would inappropriate for OU to cut any nets down. It would be nonsensical.

My reference had more to do with the poster's total lack of confidence in our ability to win than any desire to cut down the nets.

That's why the next game Tubbs had the entire team wear mittens for pre-game. It was hysterical.
