It’s not like the wins are coming easily for coach Sherri Coale’s Oklahoma women.
Yet, her team continues to over-perform and Tuesday night, inside Lloyd Noble Center, that was enough to snatch victory.
In her postgame television interview, Coale described how relaxed guard, forward and post Madi Williams — depends upon the possession — attacks the game and that her teammates have “taken on her personality.”
That’s a really good thing on the nights Williams plays like she played Tuesday.
The 6-foot junior finished with 27 points and 13 rebounds against Iowa State and the Sooners, who did not trail the game’s final 34:46, topped the Cyclones 67-61.
At one point, the lead stretched to 16 points in the second quarter. After taking a seven-point lead into the half, OU pushed the advantage to 14 two different times in the third quarter.
In the fourth, Sooners had to stave off a Cyclone rally that three different times made it a three-point game. Yet, each time, OU had an answer, thus never facing Iowa State in possession of the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead.
After a single free throw from Aubrey Joens with 6:05 remaining, freshman Sooner point guard Nevaeh Tot responded with a 3-pointer.
After Emily Ryan answered Tot with another 3, Williams drove the lane for a layup.
After a Joens’ layup again made it a three-point game, Williams hit again, giving the Sooners a 64-59 edge with 2:16 remaining .
The game would get no closer.
Williams made 13 of 21 shots, hit her only 3-point attempt and grabbed two steals in addition to grabbing her baker’s dozen boards.
The Sooners prevailed on what had to be the worst shooting night of Taylor Robertson’s life.
An historically good shooter from distance in the women’s college game, Robertson made 1 of 14 shots and missed all nine of her 3-point attempts. Gabby Gregory and Tot helped pick up the slack, combining on 29 points on 10 of 21 collective shooting and 4 of 9 collective 3-point shooting.
Iowa State got 20 points from Ashley Joens, 17 from Aubrey Joens and 14 from Kristen Scott. That trio combined to make 20 of 36 shots. The rest of the Cyclones made 4 of 27.
OU improved to 7-9 overall and 4-7 against Big 12 competition. Iowa State fell to 12-8 and 8-5.
The Sooners are back on the court at 1 p.m. Sunday at West Virginia to face the 19th-ranked Mountaineers (15-2, 9-2), who will be taking a 10-game winning streak into tonight’s game against Kansas.
