The mighty Cowboys are leading the juggernaught basketball power house Campbellsville by an impressive 18 to 13 score with 7:33 left in the 1st half.

Future NBA All Star Marcus Smart is scoreless. I'm sure OSU will have a good team this year. But, it does look like they have spent the 1st month of practice playing pick up games.

Just for everyone's information .....
Campbellsville University, home of the Tigers. A Private, Christian, Liberal Arts University located in South Central Kentucky.

I recorded and then watched portions of the game by FF through most of it.
To Ford's credit, he didn't leave his starters in to run up the score. He played everyone on the team. I'm guessing the second five may have logged as many minutes as the starters. Still, this was not the dominant performance one would expect against an NAIA school. The Pokes won by 10 or so. I just wasn't impressed with what I saw.

There was one play toward the end that was all too typical of what Smart would do last year to draw a charge. He moved behind an opposing player on an inbounds play. When the player turned, Smart fell to his back with his hands extended, pleading for the call. The refs didn't bite. They called a blocking foul on Marcus. If the new rules don't accomplish a thing but put a stop to Mr Flop's antics, I'm already a fan of the changes.

I think Brown was the leading scorer with 13. Another player, it might have been Cobbins, had 11 or so, No one else was in double figures.

I saw it a bit different. In the 1st half at about the 7:30 mark they had to put on a press to key a 10-0 run to get them some space. With 4:00 minutes left in the game OSU's starting 5 were still on the floor. They hit 5/6 wide open 3's in the first half and showed no sign of an interior game. Cobbins made a couple on nice post moves. But, it was over a 6'4" defender.

The OSU homer Mantzer was reduced to blubbering about how quick Smart's release was when he was passing the ball. With less than 5 minutes left he was trying to sell the idea that the opponent was much better than anticipated.

What did Clark do?

I think he scored 10 in 17 minutes. He looked pretty good. But, he like the rest of the Aggies, were being defended by a bunch of slow small college kids. They weren't able to close out on shooters and Clark out quicked his guy a couple of times.

Campbellsville only has four white guys...

According to Manzer they had 4 D-1 transfers on their team.

By D-1 transfers, do you mean players like Carl Blair and Nick Thompson?

I'm making fun of the Aggies because they have the pre season national player of the year, a high preseason national ranking, two pre season all conference 1st team players, and a predicted top of the conference finish. Then they show up looking like they think they are a bunch of pros participating in the NBA all star game.

They displayed no energy, no commitment to defense, no interior game, no nothing. An NAIA school went toe to toe with them deep into the 1st half. The aggies couldn't put them away in the 2nd half and ended up by holding them off by 10 pts. Pathetic.

This is probably the last time the aggies will have this much on paper talent. If Hillbilly Ford doesn't get this bunch gathered up and going in the right direction, there will be sadness in cow town this season and in the future.

Gary, I agree They looked like a .500 team. I don't think they'll get any better either

They're goals seem to be top 10 and at least the Sweet 16. Wouldn't surprise me to see them come up short with lack of size and coaching hindering them against a bad matchup like last year. With this much talent on a team my statement would usually seem far-fetched, but Ford could make this the norm for osu.

The wishful thinking in this thread is pretty hilarious.

I'll be the first to admit that it was a lackadaisical effort in the second half, but to think that game was any kind of real barometer for this team is beyond laughable.

Our probable starting lineup (Smart-Brown-Williams-Nash-Cobbins) was only on the court together for a grand total of about 4 minutes the entire game... and it was early in the second half, when we stretched the lead to 26 points.

There was a stretch later in the second half when the five players on the floor were Forte-Soucek-Hammonds-Nash-Murphy.

If you think those 5 will ever be on the court at the same time in a regular game, I don't know what to tell you.

Lolololololol

Jeff, describing what I saw as a "lackadaisical effort" in the second half is giving this OSU team more credit than they deserve. Your guys shot less than 35% from the field and a dismal 12.5% from three in that half.

It's not like your top eight players didn't see the floor much. Six of the top eight logged 20 minutes or more. Nash was suspended for the first half or he would have been among that group.

I agree that it's foolish to take too much from the first exhibition game of the season. The point I made (and it's one I stand by) is that a lot more was expected from the #12 team in the country with a loaded roster and four returning starters from last year's team.

This was Campbellsville U, an NAIA team. They're a scrappy bunch to be sure. But, finding a positive in a 10 point win against that team? You're better than that.

I think people are making too much of this.

We've had our fair share of ugly wins vs bad opponents in exhibitions

This would be a good thread to bump when Kruger is 3 for 3 at finishing behind OSU in the Big 12 once this season is over. At least your recruiting is really rolling. Lattin was a good pick up.

This, Hell Syracuse lost one of these not too long ago and still ended up with a 1 seed and in the sweet 16.

I'm not making any more out of it than what is was. A lackadaisical effort in both halves by highly hyped individuals and team. I'm sure that when they get to practice today their coach won't gloss over it. But, I knew their fans would get on here and try to. That is all they have got.

Agreed. Lackluster performances early on the last three years or so have been fairly common with OU. That's one of the reasons I said it would be wrong to take too much from the first exhibition game of the season.

On the other hand, OU fans and the state news media didn't put those teams on the pedestal this OSU team has been on, especially the last two seasons. I'm sure we'll see a totally different Pokes team later on. But it's sure hard not to call attention to the way they struggled in beating a powerhouse like Campbellsville. ;)
