You guys sgould be watching this.

I get hating on OSU and wanting them to be bad and all that but seriously trying to claim they are going to have a horrible season based on the crappy effort put forth by the players in a ho hum contest just isn't smart. Anyone that has watched/played/coached the game knows for one it's hard to get players up for a game like that and YES any coach will tell you that. Also teams/coaches don't always show a ton or work on a ton in games like that. IF any of you guys remember, in the 2007-2008 season, Mich. St. came roaring out of the gate losing to Grand Valley St. in double OT. The sky was falling on them as well and they went on to go 27-9 and lose to a Memphis team, that lost to KU in the finals, in the sweet 16. I'm not saying they don't have crap to fix (Neither did Ford) but just to throw out "they are gonna suck" after one lackluster exhibition game is a little premature. And for the record, before I get blasted for being an OSU homer, I'm a life long Sooner fan but also a coach of the game and it's not always as easy as it seems to have the kids clicking on all cylinders at all times....

Coach, I would be shocked if anyone on this board will disagree with you.

Believe me, most of the participants on this thread are savvy basketball fans who know full well that a performance like the one described here can happen to any team, especially in an exhibition game where there is nothing on the line except pride. Ford was running players in and out like they were practicing a fire drill. We get that, too. The majority of OU fans on this thread are just having a little fun at the Pokes' expense. I doubt if any of us would have said anything if not for the numerous articles, posts, blogs and editorials for months about how great Marcus and company are going to be.

Do I believe OSU is as bad as they looked at times against Campbellsville? Of course not. They have too much talent and depth to repeat that performance when the game really counts. Did it do my heart good to see them struggle? I'd be lying if I said it didn't bring a smile to my face. :D

I don't disagree. Whenever a team I don't like struggles, it makes me smile. I also prefer that struggle to be in the regular season against OU or in the tourney if that's the case ;)

Travis Ford is similar to Quin Snyder at Missouri not too long ago. Recruits lights out, but can't really coach worth a lick. Preseason games don't matter much though.

Me, too! Glad we're on the same page. :)

This was Campbellsville U, an NAIA team. They're a scrappy bunch to be sure. But, finding a positive in a 10 point win against that team? You're better than that.

To be clear, I'm not "finding a positive" from it.

It was a crappy effort against a bad team. But it was the first exhibition game.

I don't think it means any more than if we would have been firing on all cylinders and beaten them 100-20. It's an exhibition game.

The result either way means jack and squat when we play our first real games and even less by the time Big 12 play rolls around.

This, Hell Syracuse lost one of these not too long ago and still ended up with a 1 seed and in the sweet 16.

This exactly.

This is a common meme that simply isn't true.

Ford has never recruited "lights out." It's a misconception that is colored by recency bias. He hit the jackpot by landing Smart and, to a much lesser extent, Nash... but outside of that, his recruiting has been about at the level of what OSU has always done.*

Look at the core players on this team outside of Smart and Nash: Markel Brown, Mike Cobbins, Brian Williams, Phil Forte... none of those guys were "big time" recruits. All of them are right in line with the kind of guys that Eddie used to bring in, and they've all developed about like what Eddie's players used to do... they were inconsistent their first two years, but grew into really nice players by their 3rd and 4th.

Markel Brown is the second-best player on the team, and he was a 3-star recruit who didn't get offers from anyone else in the Big 12. It's interesting that Ford's first real "big time" recruit - Nash - might be only the 3rd or 4th best player on this team, behind Smart obviously, and then two guys who weren't highly recruited, but developed into very good players in Brown and Williams.

In fact, Ford's two bad teams at OSU were directly related to a recruiting disaster -- his first full class from 2009 that was a total bust.

Obviously, Ford is responsible for recruiting those guys, but my point is that if he's such a lights-out recruiter he wouldn't have had a class that was such an unmitigated disaster that put the program in a hole for two years.

* I will admit that recruiting has picked up since we signed Smart. This year's class in particular, led by Stevie Clark, is pretty strong. Only time will tell if they will pan out, though.

A lot of people and friends for that matter that I know always say they cheer for teams in the conference to do well in the tournies.....me, not so much :) I don't care if any of the rest of them win especially rivals. I don't mind if an ISU does well or old conf. foes like Colorado (teams that have really never had much of a connection to OU) but you won't catch me cheering for Texas, OSU or KU (this is more a personal issue :)) anytime soon........;)
