#1 Seeds to be Announced next week

"The NCAA women's basketball selection committee is taking a cue from the College Football Playoff committee this year. It announced Thursday it will be publicly releasing potential tournament seeds before Selection Monday."

"These 20 teams will host the first- and second-round games, so the reveal will give the schools the opportunity to plan and make necessary arrangements to host the "

So they are doing this to decide who will hold the first and second round games, and it does not mean that these teams will actually all be seeded in the top 20.

It also said that the top four would be listed in order but the remaining would be listed alphabetically. As far as seedings these are not set in stone. Well, OU is definitely out for hosting the initial games.

That definitely remains to be seen. There's a lot of basketball left between now and Selection Sunday, including as many as 3 games against Baylor.

From the way I read it, these will be the schools hosting but the seeds are not set in stone. We only have KSU tomorrow before they announce these 20 next Wednesday. I don't think we have a chance of being in the top 20 by Wednesday. I do think we have a good chance of being in the final top 20 for seeding but just not for hosting.

The NCAA is quite different for rankings, rpi, and seedings. I would not be at all surprised if the #2 team in the #1 conference received a fairly high seed, Charlie Creme's bracketology notwithstanding. Who, exactly, is in the area to host anyone? Waco? Lincoln? What beyond that? Can't have everyone going to North Carolina for three regionals.

I do.

I guess i must have been sleeping. Why are they doing this basically halfway through the conference schedule?

I guess i must have been sleeping. Why are they doing this basically halfway through the conference schedule?

Me sleeping too! The ONLY reason I can think of for doing this is to publicize and bring awareness to the tournament in advance. And then again, maybe the committee members get paid more for starting to meet earlier than usual.

from the article:
"These 20 teams will host the first- and second-round games, so the reveal will give the schools the opportunity to plan and make necessary arrangements to host"

Again, the seedings are not set in stone, they are just the seedings now so they can go ahead and arrange the schools who host the the first and second round games. Well, that is the way I read it

Why? Do you think they will go from strength of schedule for this or from the polls? If they go from the polls, even if we beat KSU, who is unranked, do you really think we will move into the rankings from that one game?

AP poll: others who received votes - Others receiving votes: Seton Hall 57, Green Bay 49, South Florida 20, Oklahoma 10, Florida Gulf Coast 9, LSU 8, California 8, Dayton 4, James Madison 4, Minnesota 3, Middle Tennessee 3, Gonzaga 2, Fresno St 1, DePaul 1
Dropped from rankings: Oklahoma 24

The driving force behind this is attendance, i.e., money. When they have no local team in the regional, nobody attends. This year, they decided to try to have sites which will contain a home team, so to speak. If your team is a good draw, and you are likely to be some seed, you may get a regional.

This may seem a bit unfair, but they are in it for the money. OU may get a seed just because we would bring in a crowd. Some teams may bring in no more than 2000 despite having a good team. I could even see Iowa State getting a regional if they had a little better record. They would bring in 10,000 fans. I think they know that OU would bring in that many to a regional. In contrast, some teams might have only 2,000 while hosting a regional. If there is no local team, a regional might draw 500.

Forget the rankings. I posted a better seeding than the rankings a week ago. It is more about rpi than rankings, but not really rpi.

OU will probably be seeded much higher than their ranking. They are the #2 team in the #1 conference. That, in the committee's eyes, will trump a Chattanooga, Princeton, or a #4 team in the SEC or ACC. Two of the sixteen seeds will almost certainly be Big Twelve teams, and OU is probably the second. By the time the season is ended, some of the ACC and SEC teams will not look as good as they do now. Meanwhile, OU will be #2.

Then, consider what they are really looking for----attendance.

But this isn't for regionals, it is for the first and second rounds. I don't believe
we have had huge crowds for those rounds in recent years.

Also, re Iowa State, Iowa will be one of the top 20 so if you are talking about regionals....are they going to have Iowa and Iowa State host a regional?

Okay, Syb, I posted the rpi rankings as of today about the same time you were posting this. OU is at 20. YOU DO realize that we are not talking about seedings for the tournament but seedings now so that they can go ahead and schedule the venues for the first and second round games?

This "seeding" by the committee is unrelated to the polls. The seeds seldom follow the polls all that closely. The polls have all kinds of problems and the committee works all year to learn to seed teams.

We may or may not get to host a first round game, but that decision is 100% unrelated to what some poll - like the USA today poll says. That is not what the committee uses to make these decisions.

First of all it is very reasonable to believe that the top two teams from the top conferences should be seeded in the top 20. Is it a guarantee? Of course not - but it is also not unreasonable. We just need to wait and see. In the end it will all work out. I do admit that I wish we had won 8 or 9 of our pre-conference games - but it is far too late to do anything about that at this point.

Let's look at the rankings and see what will probably happen. I think the bolded teams are in the seedings as it now stands.

1 1 Tennessee Southeastern 19-3 6-3 0-0 13-0 0-0
2 2 Notre Dame Atlantic Coast 22-2 7-1 1-0 14-1 0-0
3 3 Baylor Big 12 21-1 6-1 2-0 13-0 0-0

5 6 Iowa Big Ten 18-4 4-3 1-1 13-0 0-0
6 4 Maryland Big Ten 20-2 8-1 1-1 11-0 0-0
7 8 UConn AAC 21-1 7-1 5-0 9-0 0-0
8 7 Louisville Atlantic Coast 19-3 6-2 0-0 13-1 0-0
9 10 Arizona St. Pac-12 20-2 7-0 2-1 11-1 0-0
10 9 Oregon St. Pac-12 20-1 6-1 4-0 9-0 1-0
11 12 Duke Atlantic Coast 17-6 4-5 0-0 13-1 0-0-------third place?
12 11 Kentucky Southeastern 17-5 4-3 2-1 11-1 0-0----third place?
13 13 Florida St. Atlantic Coast 21-2 6-1 4-1 11-0 0-0---fourth place?
14 14 Dayton Atlantic 10 17-4 8-3 1-0 8-1 0-0----a lesser conference?
15 16 Princeton Ivy 19-0 10-0 4-0 5-0 0-0------Ivy League?
16 18 Washington Pac-12 16-6 6-5 3-0 7-1 0-0-----third place?
17 17 North Carolina Atlantic Coast 18-5 5-2 4-0 9-3 0-0----fifth place?
18 15 George Washington Atlantic 10 20-2 8-1 2-0 9-1 1-0---lesser conf.?
19 20 South Fla. AAC 18-4 6-2 3-1 9-1 0-0------not enough schedule?
20 21 Chattanooga Southern 20-3 8-2 2-0 10-1 0-0----Chattawho?
21 22 Stanford Pac-12 17-5 6-2 1-1 10-2 0-0-----fourth place?
22 19 FGCU Atlantic Sun 20-2 6-1 4-1 9-0 1-0----are you kidding?
23 25 Oklahoma Big 12 14-7 4-5 1-2 9-0 0-0

I think OU would likely be seeded above all those question marks for this purpose. It's not necessarily rankings or rpi, but the #2 in the #1 as opposed to the #3 or #4 in a #5 conference.

Sorry, I do not understand the bolded part. What difference does it make how teams look at the end of the season FOR WHAT the committe is doing now>
Second...OU will be no 2.......I guess you are saying they will be ranked two in the conference. But again, how does that effect the topic of the article?

Okay, Syb, I posted the rpi rankings as of today about the same time you were posting this. OU is at 20. YOU DO realize that we are not talking about seedings for the tournament but seedings now so that they can go ahead and schedule the venues for the first and second round games?
We are posting too rapidly.

Exactly!!.
We are talking about seedings for the sole purpose of defining sites. OU is a good site, and as SweetestOUGirl says, we are #2 in the #1.

I think it would take something for the NCAA to have the fifth best team from the ACC host a regional. I just don't see it. I also don't think they will accept the rankings that say that the fifth best team in the ACC is better than the second best team from the Big Twelve.
