#1 Seeds to be Announced next week

I remember when Denver was selected for a "subregional" when they assigned 8 sites for the first and second round games, with 8 teams at each one. The closest team to Denver that was there was Iowa State. The attendance for the six games was in the low 1,000 range. In a huge brand new NBA arena.

Now that they have the real NCAA rpi ratings posted for women, OU is no longer #15. But, OU is now #20.

They intended to select twenty sites. If the NCAA rpi were to be used, OU would be one of the twenty. Since Stanford, Texas A&M, Nebraska, and Dayton went down today, four teams ahead of us in the popularity polls are likely to do some sliding.

Let's look at what is now the top twenty in the rpi and the comparable attendance ratings:

Rpi/Att
1/1. Tennessee
2/4. Notre Dame
3/8. Baylor
4/10. South Carolina
5/22. Iowa
6/18. Maryland
7/XX.Arizona State
8/5. Connecticut
9/3. Louisville
10/9. Kentucky

11/20. Duke
12/XX. Oregon State
13/XX. Florida State
14/47. Dayton
15/XX. Washington
16/XX. Princeton
17/35. North Carolina
18/XX. FGCU
19/XX. George Washington
20/13. Oklahoma

21/23. Stanford
22/33. James Madison
23/XX. Chattanooga
24/42. California
25/14. Texas A&M

There are your top 25 rpi teams as of now. You might think that of the final sixteen seeds, they would be in this group. Now, you would love to have your seeds match your sites, if possible. And, you would love to have high attendance. All teams in the top 17 attendance figures draw an average of over 5,000. The top 24 gather at least 4,000. If your attendance is not ranked (those with an XX) you draw fewer than 2,426.

Some of your top attendance teams likely won't be seeded very high, if they make it into the tournament at all:
6. Purdue
7. Michigan State
11. Nebraska
12. New Mexico
15. Ohio State
16. Gonzaga
17. Penn State
18. Middle Tennessee

You might want to go with just your top sixteen. But, do you want low attendance schools like Arizona State, Oregon State, and Florida State included? Although Stanford probably won't be seeded, might they not be a better host, or Cal? Are you going to take a chance on the committee seeding Princeton? They will be undefeated, most likely.

Pulling sixteen good hosts that might match the seeds isn't an easy task. Right now, it's all about getting the attendance. Would A&M have good host attendance if they were in a bracket in Dayton?

Syb,

Who is #2 in attendance?

Why did you leave Iowa State out of this list (top attendance)?

Does anyone know who is hosting the OKC regional? OU or the Big-12?

I'm not talking about rounds 1 & 2, but the regionals.

I wasn't listing according to attendance, but according to rpi. The only teams whose attendances were cited separately were teams that I don't think have much of a chance of being seeded. Iowa State is a possible seed. Probably not.

The OKC regional is hosted by the conference. If the regional was hosted by OU, the Sooners couldn't be placed there.

I do agree that unfortunately Iowa State is a long shot to get to host a regional, but if they did attendance would be great up there. Are they the number 2 attendance team in the country?

I believe I read a while back that the women's committee had agreed to allow the higher seeded teams to host rounds 1 & 2 starting this year instead of just picking hosts as they have done for several years. There have been lots of complaints about higher seeded teams having to play the early rounds on the home court of lower seeded teams. That is probably why they are doing the seeding estimates this early. It still gives them some leeway to control those rounds for attendance, where as if they wait much longer they may get locked in. It is no one's advantage to have extremely poor attendance at the tournament games.

The new rule is that no team can host both rounds 1 & 2 and also a regional in the same year. Even if the games are at two different venues.

I noticed that in 2017, regionals have been assigned to OKC, but are being hosted by OU not the Big-12.

That means we cannot host rounds 1 and 2 that year no matter where we are seeded - unless the Big-12 takes over hosting the regional.

As has been done in previous years, conference schools reequest to host, then the conference takes over the hosting.
