2002 OU vs KU Big 12 championship game in on ESPN classic right now

You proved that I am kind of dumb. I mean that seriously. I always forget that Szendrei is helping out. I guess I'm just not impressed with these assistants coaching-wise or on the recruiting trail. Harvey is actually coaching at the D1 level. I'm trying to think of others that are but am drawing a blank. As far as Capel having Sooner pride, I don't think so. He's working at OU but is only tied to OU by contractual terms.

Kermit Holmes is an asst coach at Lamar.
Jeff Webster coaches one of the big AAU teams in the Dallas area. A poster said the other day that if Evans was hired he would probably hire Webster as one of his assistant coaches.

Detrick was so underrated during his time as was Selvy.

Selvy still remains one of my favorite OU players. I loved his versatility on defense... He could guard Hinrich and then the next possession go down and guard Drew Gooden. He was a prime reason OU's defense was so stout that year.

I still can't believe two things about that team/season:

1) Not getting a 1 seed, which was a joke... They definitely earned it

2) Losing to Indiana. Still can't believe that happened... That team was as good as any team in the country, hence convincingly beating KU (Final 4 team) and Maryland (National Champs).

But since you took Price, would you put him at the point?

Definitely wouldn't have a problem putting him there. He ran the position very effectively in '01 when J.R. Raymond was kicked off the team.

Any Sooner fan that has a problem with this type of deal is bewilderment to me. We gave a Dukie the job, he failed, why not try a Sooner?

I'm trying to think of how many former OU players Sampson had as assistants. Terry Evans is the only one I can't think of. There may have been other Director of Basketall Operations guys.

I watched the team pratice probably 25+ times the year Terry Evans was there and the only thing I ever saw him do was kick me out of the gym.

He obviously didn't know who you were. :ez-laugh:

That team was so good. I'm not sure if we have anyone on this team even on scholarship for that squad. Maybe Cam Clark would be on scholarship. He wouldn't be playing that much.

I still think Cade would somewhere. He's a local kid, not afraid to do the dirty work. He would prolly be the 10th or 11th guy off the bench though

Blake Johnston and Matt Gipson were on that team. I'm pretty sure Cam and Cade could have made it. They aren't the only ones from this team either.

Every starter on that team would be the best player on this years team, lol.

Fitz probably makes the team and gives a solid 10 minutes a game to give McG a rest.

Not sure if that's an insult (even though i think you meant it that way). 2002 was one of the best Sooner teams ever and had it not been for injuries would have prolly won our only NC

To even hint that Cam wouldn't be on scholarship on the 2002 team is quite a stretch, in my opinion. Yes, the kid's terribly inconsistent, but I believe he'll be an All Big XII performer before he's done at OU. Sampson would have offered Cam a scholarship without a second thought.

On the 2002 team: That team was more than good. The Sooners were the best team in the country, at least by conference tournament time and probably for the entire season. Sampson said so himself, and Kelvin wasn't given to hyperbole, especially when evaluating one of his own teams. Yes, the loss to Indiana is still a mystery almost nine years later.

Its obvious the 2002 team was substantially better (after all, they were substantially better than nearly everyone they played against back in '02), but I think you are using hyperbole suggesting that no one would even be on scholarship on that team.

Look at the '02 roster...

Although each scenario is different, I would say that Clark, Fitz, Cade, and Pledger are all more "scholarship worthy" than the likes of Matt Gipson, Blake Johnston, and Yo-Yo.

Pledger, Cade, and Pledger? Did you mean Fitz of one of the Pledgers?

And about half the backups. Selvy would be our best player, Detrick would be up there. YoYo probably starts at center.

Let's put it this way. None of those guys are playing. Gibson didn't even play that year. And if YoYo is on this roster he's starting. I'm not sure if Fitz plays as much as YoYo did back then. YoYo was a lot better rebounder than Fitz is for sure.

Definitely agree with that.

Those aforementioned players I listed were good enough to be on scholarship, but none would see the floor.
