2002 OU vs KU Big 12 championship game in on ESPN classic right now

I don't think Detrick was all that much better than Cade, to be honest.

Jason Detrick had the single greatest rebound/finish/And 1 I've ever seen when we beat UConn up in Hartford in 2002. He snagged that rebound on a dead run when it was WAY behind the back of his head.

If you put Kelvin at the Table of Truth at Othello's I'd bet you a buck that his biggest regret at OU was redshirting Detrick for the 2003 season.

I understood the theory, but I didn't agree with it. Kelvin knew the 2004 team would be extraordinarily young and he wanted to have one guy who knew the system and could score. In hindsight, considering his play in 2003, the guy who should've redshirted was Ere. You only get so many chances at a national championship, and it's better to have all your bullets in the chamber. Maybe we beat Texas in Norman with Detrick. If we do, we don't get shipped to Albany.

It didn't help that Detrick hurt his abdomen on the preseason trip to Costa Rica in the fall of 2003 and was never quite as explosive. He did almost get us to the Tournament, but we came up short in two close losses at the end of the year (at Colorado and against Texas in Dallas).

It's laughable to think that any player on this team would even play on that 02' team. :ez-roll:

Statistically, he definitely wasn't that much better.

In fact, you could make an argument that Cade has been better: When comparing Detrick's senior year in '04 to Cade's this year, Cade has outperformed him in almost every category.

That doesn't necessarily mean Cade is better or would've been a better fit for that Final Four team (IMO Detrick was a better fit), but it definitely shows that the gap isn't wide between the two at all.

Without getting into another HUGE argument, what you're saying unintentionally is that OUr team's best player currently is Detrick-like?

A lot of good points made, and I too felt/still feel that Detrick shouldn't have been redshirted. OU's achilles heel that season was when the offense would become stagnant, and having another player with the offensive capability that Detrick presented would have been extremely beneficial.

As for Ere, I still have a hard time understanding the slump he went through the middle of the '03 season. I will give him credit though, he was fantastic in the Sweet 16 vs. Butler. That was a flashback to the way he played the majority of his junior year.

Huh? I'm having a hard time understanding this question.... Mind clarifying?

And what I am saying is that the gap between Cade and Detrick isn't nearly as big as some would think (and have hinted at).

Detrick was a backup in 2002 and averaged 9.4 points a game in only 20 minutes in 2002. I've said before that I didn't like him in 2004. But I've been convinced by others that it was probably because of injuries and the fact that he was so good as a Junior. Detrick was hurt in 2004 so it's hard to compare him to Cade.

Its hard to measure just how injured Detrick was his senior year when he played fantastic for OU in some of those games (i.e. 35-36 points at Colorado).

For all we know, it could have been something else that was the major reason for his overall underwhelming performance in 2004.

Bottom line is that it may not be an entirely accurate comparison since Detrick could have been hampered with nagging injuries, but it shows enough to suggest that he wasn't significantly better than Cade.

Not exactly Detrick-like in terms of style, but as for substance, yes. And I take your point, it is a sad state of affairs.

I'm just making the point that I think Davis would have played some minutes on that team. Sampson would have loved Davis, I suspect.

Gun to my head, I'm honestly not sure who I would take between Detrick and Davis, the more I think about it, and I'm no Cade Davis fanboy.

Detrick and Davis are 2 different players. Detrick was a slasher and Cade is more of a shooter.

It really sucks that Hollis was hurt/banged up at the end of the year and especially in the Tournament, OU would have cut down the nets with him healthy.

Quannas White sprained his ankle one of those years or we would have won it all. I'm not sure we beat Syracuse the 2nd year even with a healthy Hollis.

I'm talking about the 2002 tourney in reference to Hollis.

Never knew he was hurt in 2002. His groin was injured in 2003, but I thought he was fine in 2002.

He was beat up pretty bad in the tournament in 2002. He could barely walk against UIC in the first round. Toughness and adrenaline kept him out there.

I don't recall it getting a whole lot of media coverage.
