When Sherri was coaching the U19 team in the Moscow, she was able to get some FIBA experience. The U-16 team of 2013 should be of interest to OU fans. Let's look at the members of that team:
F De'Jeanea Boykin 6-2 F UConn
P Keilani Brown, 6-5, Baylor
W Chassity Carter 5-11 Committed to Vanderbilt 2016
F Lauren Cox, 6-4 Uncommitted 2016
PG Crystal Daingerfield, 5-6 Committed to UConn 2016
PG Asia Durr, 5-10 Louisville
G Sabrina Ionescu 5-10 Uncommitted 2016
PG Taylor Murray 5-6 Kentucky
PG Arika Ogunbowale, 5-6 Notre Dame
F Katie Lou Samuelson 6-3 UConn
G Chelsea Dungee, 5-10, Committed to Oklahoma 2016
P Nancy Mulkey, 6-9, Committed to Oklahoma 2016
Of what were considered the best twelve in the nation to be on that team, three have committed to or have signed with UConn, one each with Baylor, Kentucky, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, and Louisville. Two are uncommitted. Two are committed to Oklahoma.
You would think that this might generate some enthusiasm. Only UConn is hanging with OU on getting these players. But, we didn't even include the fact that of the five players on the All-Tournament team:
Asia Durr
Katie Lou Samuelson
Lauren Cox
Lauren Yearwood, (Canada)
Gileysa Penzo, (Puerto Rico)
We have a third to go with Dungee and Mulkey. Penzo made the All-tournament team in the FIBA tournament. If you want to know why she made the team, she was about #3 on her own team in scoring, but was one of three scorers on her team. She was about #5-7 in the entire tournament in assists and rebounds (leading Puerto Rico in rebounding), and she had almost twice as many steals as the next person in the tournament (22-12). She kind of does it all. So, UConn and OU will both end up with three of the top players in FIBA. Wonder who will get Cox?
When you look at that type of talent coming in and add Ana Llanusa to it, we may not have a Courtney, but we may have the best collection of talent at various positions that we have had, at least since 2002.
We read that Penzo was only sixteen when she arrived at OU. A lot of that team are 2015 recruits. OU's recruits on that team were among the youngest with Penzo at 16, and Mulkey and Dungee both as 2016 recruits. Indeed, looking at birthdays, Mulkey is a year younger than her competition for playing time that year.
When we got Courtney, we got some good players because of Courtney. But, that is the only time that we have been able to get top ten prospects. It was kind of a one shot deal. Suddenly, we are bringing in some rather highly-rated prospects.
