9 game skid = worst Big 12 team

Per rivals:

TMG was offered by Baylor, Texas, and A&M. Tiny was offered by Cal and Miss. St. Pledge was offered by Boston College, Clemson, S. Carolina, VCU,Va Tech, and Wake Forest. What blows me away is Fitz; his list includes cal, kentucky, louisville, marquette, minnesota, pitt, seton hall, st johns, tennessee, and xavier.

That's assuming that the list is for offers; not sure if it's that or just schools that showed interest.

That's correct. The only player on our roster recruited by KU is WW.

We have ZERO players recruited by Duke.

Not sure what to say here other than OU was the worst big 12 team this year. Never thought I would see the day I considered this program to be the worst big 12 team at the end of the year.

Can a coach can every recover from a horrid season like this? We are only a handful of years removed from Kelvin's 4 year top 5 record run. Capel couldn't close the deal on Reynolds and James and followed it up with brutally bad recruiting decisions that produced this season.

For those that say the future is bright I will never be completely comfortable with what might happen this year as the season tips off with Capel at the helm.

This would be like Stoops going 3-9 or 4-8.

We need post depth in a hurry and we haven't signed a post player yet. Next year will be better but we won't make the dance and teams won't respect us without post depth not onthe roster.

That's unfair to say because James was a classless jerk who quite obviously wanted to jerk around Capel from the get go, letting his cousin talk to Capel on the phone pretending to be him. Reynolds seems like a good kid and I would have loved to have had them both but to blame Capel for not landing them is unfair. IMO Crocker has more class than both kids combined.

Based on the rivals page for our frosh; wasn't exactly scrub programs interested in our guys. Still can't believe the programs looking at Fitz... wow.

The last class at OU was exceptional on paper. Anyone that denies that is a bit off. However, right now you have to question just how good that class really was. I personally think it will prove to be a really good class; provided the attitude problems can be corrected (regardless of whose fault it is that whole class has some attitude issues - two guys steal, guys don't hustle on defense, they all got suspended, etc.).

One year Sampson brought in Everett, Gray, Godbold and Carter. On paper it just didn't look that great. However, in retrospect that is an outstanding class. Everett and Gray were big time players. Godbold started for four seasons. Carter was the best player on the team his senior season.

When you discuss recruiting you really need to make sure everyone is making the evaluation from the same time (at signing or in hindsight).

I really hope the light comes on for these young guys. There were instances this season where I could see the potential and would get excited about what the future could bring. Then, of course, there were the many, many WTF moments. If they can commit to being team players, playing defense, and playing hard then this team can be really good.

Very true. When looking for an article about something else, I found an old one from the start of the 2003 season. It was about Sampson announcing the recruiting class that year of Lavender, Mackenzie, Foust and Longar. At the end of the article it says:

"These four high school seniors, along with current freshmen De'Angelo Alexander, Kevin Bookout, Matt Gipson and Larry Turner, will keep Oklahoma basketball on the national map for a long, long time."

Like Denver said, on paper both the 02 and 03 classes were very good. Had all of those guys stuck around and bought in to Sampson's system the program would have been even better than it was when Capel took over and it was good then.

Of the names listed only Longar and Bookout stuck around all 4 years, and both lost a year Bookout for an injury and Longar for grades. Alexander, Gipson, and Turner left -- all not because of their choice. Lavender, Mackenzie and Foust left from the other class.

So, on paper those were 2 stout recruiting classes, but looking back they weren't as good as we thought because they didn't stick around to ever make a significant impact.

I have no recollection of Longar losing a year to grades. I am under the impression that Longar speaks seveal langauges and both quite intelligent and highly motivated. (I could be wrong).

Your right. He didn't lose a year, but he had to go to a prep school. So, instead of starting in the fall of 03 like Lavender, Mackenzie, Foust, and Tobias (the kid from Miami, FL) he re-signed with OU the next year and started in the fall of 04 and played for 4 years.

So, he was just delayed a year...but was very smart as you intimated.
