This is purely speculation and should not be interpreted as being a slam against Gibbs or anyone in the program. I've just thought about this some since her self-announced transfer to a JC.
None of us really knows how she got to OU, not the complete story, and we probably never will. I think, however, my hypothesis has a lot to "say" for this program and our coaches.
Gibbs was so down on the radar she wasn't even going to college, according to most of the discussions/rumors/etc. we all heard about her. She appeared completely out of the blue.
Reportedly she has a connection to Pam, Jan or the OU program somehow.
She gets a totally unexpected D-1 offer and either gets a ship or is getting some kind of financial assistance.
Shocking. Her arrival is internet fodder for OUWBB supporters.
But when you sit and just think about it a moment, it was no really big deal.
We had the schollie available. The roster was short of bigs. She was raw, but some saw a potential for rapid growth where she becomes a factor in the rotation.
Then, even in preseason, she gets very little court time. Rumors swirl that there are questions about whether she can cut it accademically.
The season goes on and she gets some very, very mop-up duty and basically is just a body to practice against as rumors of academic issues increase.
Towards end of season transfer rumors almost become fact. A month ago, she says she's off to JC.
There's nothing wrong with any of that. I applaud the kid for trying and I applaud our coaches for giving her a chance.
But here's what I think really happened.
I think Jan, Pam, Sherri, or other coaches or program folks, knew or got told of her. She was extremely raw, had academic issues even at a small, rural school and perhaps she didn't have much ahead of her.
Sherri and her team reached out and gave a kid a chance to improve her future when there might not have been much of a future available. They wanted to give a young woman from nowheresville a chance to go to college, get used to life and school in a bigger environment, and to give her the tools and confidence she lacked to succeed.
That might not have been the way it happened, but I don't care. That's what I'm going to say and think happened. Why? Because that's the type of people our coaches are at their very foundation.
Good luck, Ms. Gibbs. You will always be a Sooner.
