Alarm at Tennessee

Holly may have done an excellent job recruiting so far, but if Tenn doesn't make the Final 4 this year, they could be on a big downturn. I don't think anyone is scared of Tenn anymore. It will be surprising if the Vols can beat Stanford and Oregon St on the road.

The article mentioned how Tennessee hasn't been to a final four since 2008, and most of the kids were around 10 years old. I think the same can be said about OU, we haven’t made the final four in a long time, and it’s been even longer since we've won anything in the big 12….

It’s not always easy to recruit off tradition….

I agree, you need to be able to tell kids what you have done recently or be able to show them you are getting better, both in winning as well as recruiting. What happened 5 years ago is old news.

I think that's why OU lost out on Lauren Cox. She liked the Sooners a lot but wanted to be on a national contender.

You may be right but I doubt it. If so, it means she has no confidence in her ability to lead a team to victory (which may be true since that is what has happened in her HS years up to now).

More than likely she has been a strong supporter of a state of Texas team for years and has felt anger towards OU due to that. It is very hard for a HS kid to get past those emotions when making a decision like this. That is probably why she dropped us so early.

I will not be totally shocked if she transfers out of Baylor before all is said and done. Much like Peyton did with A&M. I'm certainly not predicting it, just saying it won't shock me if it plays out that way.

Who predicts Tennessee gets this fixed and turned around? Who predicts otherwise?

I think that if the current coach can't win and soon, The Vols will find a new coach rapidly. They are rather proud of women's basketball in Tennessee.

I think when Conference tournament rolls around, Tennessee will be a totally different team. I feel they are getting used to playing with all the talent they have. They have talent and size at every position. Sometimes that can be a bad thing. I think Baylor will be that way next year as well.

Well Cox did visit OU at one time, but if you noticed her final list of schools had a lot of talented players...It's not about self doubt on her part, it's more about kids wanting to win and putting themselves in the best position to do so... I think OU needs to win the big 12 or come in no worse then 2nd and land 1 or 2 more top 50 kids in 2017 for the elite talent to start giving OU a serious look in the future....

I agree but I would say "top 20" kids. Cox is most certainly not suffering from a lack of confidence. She wants to win a NC and she did not see that a likely possibility at OU causing her to eliminate us from consideration.

I do not believe we will have a chance of making it back to another final four until we have 2-3 McDonalds AA. Nancy will be one.

No disagreement with you about Cox's confidence. You will note I indicated that in suggesting there were probably other reasons beyond simply winning a National Title at play in her mind.

Many kids grow up as fans of a team - with dislike toward their strongest opponents. An example is Sterling Shepherd. He was going to OU if offered. He was not going to bypass us for Texas, Baylor, Notre Dame, Alabama, etc. Lots of kids grow up like that. Trying to tie the recruiting of out of state kids simply to how hard you recruit them is naïve. Of course even within a state allegiances exist. Kids who grow up as OSU fans may "hate" OU and never agree to play there - and vice versa. Same in Texas between the various schools. Emotional ties in young people are very firm in may cases - and have an impact in recruiting.

Are you serious? You just said she's not confident in her ability to win, then you went on to take a dig at her high school career as an example... It's just funny how you've been on Norm about his feelings towards some of our kids but did the same thing... P

Sorry Mac, but you did not read what I said carefully enough. Here is the quote:

To set the stage recall Norm or someone said she likely crossed off OU her list because she doubted we could win a title - even with her on our team. So I replied:

"You may be right but I doubt it. If so, it means she has no confidence in her ability to lead a team to victory (which may be true since that is what has happened in her HS years up to now)."

I was actually trying to help Norm out with that one possible (but in my mind unlikely parenthesized) reason he could be right and she might doubt her ability to lead a team to victory

"I doubt it" means I don't agree with the ones who think she doubts her ability to help a team win. Some seem to think she thinks that way - but I don't. I expect she is pretty confident.

I do not think she crossed us off simply because she did not think we could win a title even with her help. I expect there were a number of factors at play. Don't you? If that were her only criteria she would have gone to UCONN with no hesitation. If I'm not mistaken, we have been in as many final Fours as Baylor over the past 10-15 years. - 3 each.

.

It's still sounds like you were doubting her ability to win...

I did not mean to sound that way. She has struggled to lead her HS team to a championship so far, but this is a new year. Perhaps she has learned a lot and as a senior will lead them to a state championship. It will be interesting to see.

Plus lots of kids don't win state championships in HS, but play on college teams that achieve more success than they did in HS.

But lets get this thread back to Tennessee. Will they get it turned around?

A lot of great high school players never win state championships because they don't get to pick their teammates or coaches.

Tennessee needs a new coach, and someone that doesn't have prevues ties to the program, some new blood... If they Give Holly her walking papers they would probably look at Pats son Taylor to be the coach.

Lauren may have made a mistake if she wanted a winner. Nancy, Vivi, Maddie, Ana, Chelsea, Gabbi, T'Ona, Gioya, Peyton, EJ----there may be a title or two in there. Some interesting chemistry developing.

Holly is a good coach but not the super coach type that Summitt was. How many times have we seen a good assistant (BB and football) elevate to HC and not cut it? Tennessee will be getting a new coach before very long. When Gomer succeeded Bud and Gary Gibbs succeeded Barry the bloom was off the lily.

Lauren liked OU a lot--no anger there...lol She has a very weak hs team. It's extremely hard to win state in Texas. It was amazing what she did last year putting her team on her back.
