That was the season where OU beat Knight and Co. three times, but all were close, and it was made all the more enjoyable because of the Sand Ags' little tantrums over the first game at the LNC.

That's the one in which Hollis Price hit a last-second two-pointer to send the game into overtime, and OU wound up winning by five. I recall that there was no controversy over the "clock keeper" until one of ESPN's Knight-bootlickers got involved and said the clock started late. It was about 1/3 of a second, but within a few days the Sand Ags were acting like it was not only (A) deliberate by the guy at the scorers' desk, and (B) a couple of seconds that went by before he started it. I guess in Lubbock Logic dictated that Price would have just taken a few dribbles and let the clock expire, before shooting ( :facepalm ).

The rematch in Lubbock also went to OU, but not after our side had to endure crap like their SID listing the first game as "outcome under review" (which it wasn't), and their scoreboard operator flashing "Cheaters!" on the video board. Naturally, they didn't like that outcome much, either.

OU won the third game, in the Big 12 semis, I believe in OT again. I remember that the Fuhrer (Knight) pretty much encouraged his players to not shake hands before the opening tip. Again, :facepalm :facepalm .

I also lived in eastern New Mexico for a time, and I know their fan base acted superior to the schools west of their nearby state line. So I won't apologize for getting extra-pleased over a Sand Aggy Smackdown.

The Norman game & the B12 tourney game were on Classic today, & were quite pleasurable to re-watch. The post game handshake between Knight & Sampson after the tourney game was more like a subtle, low 5 it was so short. :D

That idiot wanted us to forfeit the game because the clock started a half a second late. In that case, Hollis would have gotten his shot off a half-second earlier. Perhaps it wouldn't have gone it, but Knight made far more big a deal about that than he should have.

I remember commenting back then that OU should agree to forfeit the game if Knight agrees to forfeit and return his 1987 Championship hardware with Indiana. I remember in the Elite Eight LSU had Indiana down late in the game when Knight threw one of his temper tantrums at the scorer's table. It intimidated the officials and Indiana got every call down the stretch. Dale Brown HATED Bobby Knight after that. He said in an interview several years later that he had to forgive him because someone he knew was killed by a drunk driver and the mother of the victim forgave the defendant...Brown said that putting it into perspective, I had no choice to forgive what Bobby Knight did.

Just looked at their OU game thread....Tech fans are kind of odd...Reminds me of Okie State fans.....They posted how classless OU fans were... because the crowd was booing a call by the ref......I have seen posts like that on the Okie State board....But never thought there could be 2 programs with fan bases like that.

For an overall athletic program that has basically done nothing, their fans are pretty pathetic. They want to be relevant so bad, one of the big boys, but they never have and most likely never will. They hate everybody. They are the last ones that should be complaining about fans. As much as I heard about how great the Baylor fans were from some who went on the bus trip, I have to say that over the years I've heard numerous times what a terrible experience it is to go to any sporting event on their campus(especially football). It actually in the past has gotten to the point of being scary. Not only are the fans terrible but their stadium/arena officials and security have really sucked in the past controlling it. Where do I start... Defecating on opposing team buses, spraying black ink on players in the tunnel, blocking opposing basketball coaches and teams from leaving the arena and starting brawls, tearing down goal posts and ramming it into the visiting section... I'm sure I've forgotten others... Of course, there are wonderful, very classy Tech fans out there too. But, from my experience and that of many I know I would say their mean(statistically) pretty much reverts to "LOSER" status...

Tech fans, generally speaking, are considered the most classless group in the Big 12. I don't really think it's that close either.

I knew some guys who played for Tech back in the 80's - including a kid from the town where I lived who played football there (last year was '83). I also got to know a couple of guys from the eastern side of New Mexico, after they'd graduated, who played for Tech and who later had ties to UNM. One was Nelson Franse, who bucked the trend of east-siders going to Tech by transferring to UNM in '82. The other was current UNT coach Tony Benford, who played a couple of high school games in Oklahoma while a senior at Hobbs High, and who later served as the chief recruiter for the Lobos in the 90's. They're both really good guys, and back in their day Tech wasn't so obnoxious. I really don't know when it changed.

FWIW - now that football recruiting season is almost over and people are having all kinds of angst on OU sites over in-state kids, it made me think of Benford. When he came out of Hobbs in '82, he was barely recruited because it was widely assumed he'd go to Tech. But, he really wanted a Lobo offer at least, because he followed them on statewide TV. That was one time the in-state school really dropped the ball with a guy who could have really excelled and become an in-state legend.

The students also had free white t-shirts passed out with "clockgate" written on them. The fans were not pleased. Also remember Bobby spiking his clipboard during a timeout. Good win in front of a sell out crowd on the road
