Anyone have any clue as to coaches OU may be looking at for the remaining assistant coach positions?

Right now there is only one open position. Kevin Kruger filled one of the slots. Because LK hired Kevin who is relatively inexexperienced, I think they need an experienced coach who is a proven recruiter. He probably should be black.

Because a lot of good, experienced assistants are working at signing kids for their current school, and the signing period isn't over until May 18th, I don't think LK will announce a new assistant until after that date.

I was told several weeks ago that ORU assistant, Wade Mason, might be a candidate. He and Coach Crutch are good friends. He also served as a GA under Coach Kruger before taking the job at ORU.

In reading Mason's profile on ORU's web site, he appears to be a solid prospect. He was named the top assistant in the Southland Conference by Next Up Recruits his first season at ORU.

Here are some other tidbits from his profile:

In three seasons with the Golden Eagles, Mason has helped ORU garner seven all-conference nods, including a first team, and all defensive team selection in Shawn Glover in 2013-14. Glover finished the season with a 21.3 points per game average, the first ORU player since AP All-American Caleb Green to average more than 20 points per game, and scored 703 points, the third most for a single season in ORU history.

In 2012-13, Mason's tutelage helped Warren Niles to first team all-conference and first team all-district honors.

Everything I've read about Coach Mason points to him potentially being a high level recruiter. I still think Greg Grensing also makes sense for this last spot. We'll see...

That's a sad social commentary on today's times..

Maybe so but I think having at least 2 of our 4 coaches being black is appropriate when the demographics of our scholarshiip players is predominately black. Next season 10 of our 12 scholarship players are black. I'm just saying our coaching staff needs to be diverse and flexible. We have the 2 Kruger's and Crutch. I think the 4th coach needs to be black. I didn't mean for it to be a social commentary on today's time. It's just an opinion about the makeup of a coaching staff.

I understood what you were referring to. When OU lost a black assistant football coach the previous year (Jerry Montgomery), Bob Stoops came right out and said he was looking for a minority to replace him...and likely for the same reasons you were referring to.

holy cow...John Thompson is that you? I remember him at Georgetown, saying more minorities needed to be hired as coaches because the majority of players were minorities.

How about the argument that maybe, just maybe, the school's athletic teams should represent the racial make-up of the school? Since they are representatives of the university. Crazy argument, isn't it...it's the exact same thing.

I want the best assistants regardless of color. Athletes want good coaches. PERIOD. The only reason a kid cares what the color of skin is coach is, is because he's (or she's) been fed that bullcrap their entire lives.

Talk about perpetuating racism, higher % of coaches who are the same racial make-up....judging by race. I could care less if the whole staff was black, white, brown or red..(since we are using colors to define race) I just want good coaches. I'm sure the NAACP and Jesse Jackson and crew would love to hear since we have 2 white guys on the team, we HAVE hire at least 1 white coach...lol...that would go over great.

Take it you think only women can coach women sports and men coach men sports...then there shouldn't be any women refs in men's games and visa versa. Interesting...

Let's not escalate this thread into an argument about race and derail the original topic. Lon will pick the most qualified candidate regardless of race. He doesn't play games or pander to teenage kids. End of story.

Yes, by all means! This is not the place for a discussion about race.

I knew from the beginning where usedtobe1 was coming from. He didn't say hiring a black assistant was mandatory, and knowing him as I do, he certainly didn't mean to turn this thread into a discussion about race.

Please get back on topic and leave it at that. Thanks!

no problem..but he's the one who said "he should probably be black" while referring to 8 of the 10 players are black...I was merely pointing out the ridiculousness of his post.

I just want the best assistants...whatever race they are.

Kruger Jr is all we got now...Crutchfield gone as well?

Crutch will be back...

I was the one who said it. Teams can have a head coach and 3 assistants. Both Lon Kruger and a very inexperienced Kevin Kruger are white. Crutch is black and is being seriously considered for other opportunities. I think the next assistant should be experienced, have a proven track record as a recruiter, instrumental in player development, and also be a minority. That's still my opinion.

I'm pointing out you sticking your head in the sand thinking it doesn't make a difference in recruiting and helping players with personal matters. I still think it is in OUs best interest to have 2 of the 4 coaches to be minorities.

Here's a quick story as an example. Back in the mid-90's I was leading a search committee for a head coach for a 6A school. Bill Self was the head coach at ORU at the time. He called me one day to endorse a young coach who was previously the team "manager" at OSU and ran all of Eddie Sutton's camps. The young coach was very charismatic and happened to be black. Self and I talked for probably 30 minutes. Bill told me he would like to hire the young coach as an assistant at ORU but he (Bill) was a young head coach, and he needed to hire a minority who had more experience to complement his own weakness. Coaches are keenly aware of what they need in their assistants to best balance their staff.

The young coach? He didn't get the job but years later did become the head coach at that school, but has since moved on. He's now a very respected head coach at another Oklahoma HS.

that's fine...I teach in a predominately black, urban school...and have coached both boys (mostly black guys) and girls bball in HS.

I"m white, middle class, male...I think I relate well to both my students and players...they didn't care what race I was nor socio-economic background.

That's your opinion, I have mine. Really doesn't matter..I want the best coaches no matter what race they are. It's actually sad that it has to be thought of that way still.

but back to topic...he's got 1 for sure, his son, Crutchfield might or might not be here next year...haven't heard of any other names.

Hopefully Crutchfield will stay, he's recruiting some good talent.

Him not getting the NMS job almost guarantees he will be here next year. Not in on any other jobs.

You're 100% right. People grow up with different experiences and any team at any university knows that the coaches need to be able to relate to the players and prospective recruits. Having a diverse staff helps foster that.

Wade Mason has been hired by Kyle Keller at SFA...

The latest news about Mason shoots holes in the rumor I heard that he might be a serious candidate on OU's staff. It also adds to the intrigue about who will fill the remaining spot?

To me, the best news on the coaching front lately is that Coach Crutch may not be going anywhere, at least for now.
